With ammo prices they way they are currently we decided instead of a normal monthly 3 gun match, we are running a Tactical Rimfire match. Imagine uspsa and 3 gun style stages but with .22 rifles and pistols. i use my M&Ps in steel challenge but there is almost no movement. this TR match will have lots of movement with reloads and gun to gun transitions. Targets will be a mix of mini IPSC, IPSC and steel knock off plates, mini poppers and even a dueling tree! I will be running my M&P15-22 with Primary Arms Micro, magpul goodies, JP trigger springs. (pistol will be my M&P22) i will take video of the match and post them up.

UPDATE:

Had a great match. 13 shooters came out including our local 10 year old prodigy. we only had one squib scare but it was a false alarm. i had two rifle jams but i handled them quick. I ended up winning the match. M&P22 ran like a champ. The 15-22s jams were probably mag loading related. BTW my ammo was CCI AR Tactical.

Stage 1: Classifier Style with Pistol

Stage 1

Stage 2: Classifier Style with Rifle

Stage 2

Stage 3: run and gun with rifle

Stage 5

Stage 6: Run and gun with pistol, stationary rifle

Stage 6

ALL semi-auto rifle comps are .22 in the UK :p ;) We call it 'Mini Rifle'.

Nice looking rifles and sounds like an enjoyable course of fire - have fun!

That is a very nice matched pair you've got.

I wish we had full 3 gun matches in .22. (I don't know what you'd do for the shotgun though 12 guage is one of the cheapest calibers to shoot). I'd love a .22 rifle and .22 pistol match.

We have a rimfire devision in the local IDPA Defensive Multi Gun shoot here, so that's what mine gets used for. It is good fun all round.

Now that sounds like a fun time, can't wait to see the video. Been trying to talk our local range into using rimfire instead of the big stuff for similar matches and have been met with serious resistance.... :(

However, with the price of 223 right now, I have a sneaking suspicion they will change their minds. ;)

For pretty much anything under 100m the .22LR will shoot just as well as the center fire rounds, it's easier on the steel, the holes in the paper are the same size and it is lighter on the wallet.

I feel better running a 200 round match with .22LR than I do with 5.56mm. Honestly I can pay for an entire 200 round match with ONE MAGAZINE of 5.56mm.

Paper does not care if you shoot it with a .17HMR or a .50BMG. Will a .22 rifle stop an invasion? No. But it does mean we get to eat this week :p

You are not lying about the higher caliber rounds getting pricier... I went to Gander mountain (was late to get .22 ammo of course!) and was just browsing .223 was almost running 1.25 per round and the 30-06 was running 2.50... neither were match or anything special just regular plinking rounds... Now I see why everyone is gobbling up our precious ammos!

Also if you have a range that lets you do something like this, a .22 shoot house is easier to build and lasts longer than a center fire one.

My range could have one but it would be just me and my son. He would beat me so I don't think its gonna happen.:D But it sure would be nice to have one of those locally.

Ammo prices are starting to come back down. Natchez had M855 for $79/100 last week. That's .46 cents cheaper per round than a month ago. Walmart is selling brass at around .42 cents per round and steel at around .31 cents per round.

It's still high but compared to six weeks ago it's dropped considerably.

It was great seeing the young boy shooting the match. I hope someday my Grandsons will be able to enjoy the time on a range.

Paper does not care if you shoot it with a .17HMR or a .50BMG. You've got that right! I've shot a fair amount of vintage military rifle matches. These are commonly fired on a SR-1 at 100 yds. At that distance no one in the world needs a fire breathing monster to get good results. For many years I've used 165 gr. cast lead bullets w/ 8.0 gr. of Unique in a 03 Springfield for practice. And... when a match comes up... I take that little practice load and use it for the match. Many competitors use similar loads.
