I am not sure how I had missed this story previously. The UK papers dubbed this guy the Russian Rambo. This is purportedly the transcript of his last words
Alexander Prokhorenko. Russian Special Forces Commando hero Last Words Transcript | The Offensive on #Palmyra - World in War

The guy had been married just 18 months and left his pregnant wife behind in Russia. She had no idea he was in Syria. He was killed calling in an airstrike on his own position to avoid being taken alive.

Some people don't like the Russians, but it was ISIS that he was fighting.

Russian or Eskimo

He was a brave man and I hope he got a few before they got him, or the airstrike did. I don't care if he was Russian or Eskimo.

It seems clear to me that he needed some aerial firepower around his perimeter. The guy was surrounded. Telling him to 'go here' or 'go there' wasn't going to help.

They did parade a body and gear but it's unclear if it was him or another special forces contractor. There were a few that got killed in the events leading up to and including taking the city.

That takes some serious cajones. The whole thing. ......from fighting off an enemy that has surrounded you to waiting till they got closer and calling in an airstrike on yourself!

Hopefully he took a lot of them with him

True, Russian or not, he was fighting terror. I honor him the same as anyone else.

I hope the world takes note of this one man's bravery and steps up the fight.

There are many Russians in this area. Many of the older men are combat veterans from times past. We may have considered them the enemy, but they served their country the same as many of us have.

RIP brave soldier. I hope that someday your children are told about your bravery and sacrifice.

He was brave and I hope got took a lot of them with him? He'll get the: Hero of the Soviet Union, and probably the: Order of Lenin and the: Alexander Nevsky award. His family will also be paid an amount of rubles monthly the rest of their lives. My hat is tipped to this soldier.

I have great respect for the Russian people and its current leadership. It was the USSR that was our enemy and why we allied with them in WWII is still beyond me. From 1919 until the collapse of the USSR, they were our enemies. Most people fail to realize the tremendous difference between the old USSR and the new Russia.

In colonial days Russia was one of our stoutest allies. I think they may well become so again.

I read that that Vladmir Putin himself will present the widow with a posthumous Hero of the Russian Federation medal. This replaced the old Soviet era hero medal and is the highest award that the Russian state can bestow. They also seem to mean it when they say that they lay someone to rest with full honors and do provide a full ceremony with both Russian military and Russian Orthodox rites. (Russian under Putin made the Russian Orthodox church the official state religion.)
