S W 1917 barrels new source

I recall reading an article in one of the gun rags decades ago about a guy who had some barrels made. He had a rare / odd old autoloader with a bad barrel. Feeling flush, he went to a machinist to have one made. (Apparently, this guy really knew how to properly make gun barrels, it wasn't just a pipe that would fit!)

Anyways, it turned out that the machinist told him that once he was set up to make one, it would not cost all that much more to make a hundred. So the writer took him up on it and that was the purpose of the article --- to see if anyone wanted one of these barrels at a reasonable price.

Now I'm not saying the article was accurate, and I'm just going from memory. But it has made me wonder if some individual or group wanted to front the money, how hard would it be to find a company that would make barrels for the S&W M1917? Obviously, if they cost $2,000 each, that would be prohibitive. My guess is that S&W would not be interested but it may be worth a discussion about who could do this. Just a thought.

Years ago there was a great need for replacement S&W Model 1917 .45acp barrels. The gun market was flooded with Colt and S&W Model 1917s. Most Colt Model 1917s had good bores, but Smith and Wesson were mostly pitted.

Colt 1917/New Service barrels would be a lot simpler to make than S&W barrels because the Colts didn't have the forged extractor lug and forged front sight that S&W does, so it is a simple lathe job to make the barrels from round blanks. Having said that, a well equipped modern machine shop with CNC machining equipment could turn out 1917 barrels pretty easily and cheaply from rifled blanks of sufficient diameter.

I called them back a few minutes ago. They don't know when they will be available or how many.

I know they buy parts. Perhaps it is from an old dealer or collector. Since quantity is unknown and if I needed one I would check online daily.

And you all are welcome, sitting on hold for 10 minutes was not fun. :(

Numrich had aftermarket S&W 1917 barrels in the past. I bought one perhaps 20 years ago and sold it here about 5 years ago. Brand new, same basic as S&W except for the roll markings. If I remember, they were marked "IAI' or something similar. I think they were made by IMBEL in Brazil.
