On this side of the DMZ (aka the 49th parallel), the S&W M&P 15-22 is classified by the RCMP as a "restricted" firearm which means it must be registered and transported as a handgun to an "approved range" only.
This precludes taking it into the woods as a plinking or hunting firearm. Why? Because it looks like it's bigger brother chambered in .223/5.56mm.
My wife and I both have "Sport" model .223s which of course are registered as "restricted". We bought CMMG .22 LR conversion kits rather than invest in a couple of the .22 LR 15-22s.
They work well and we like them, but they require good ammo to function with 100% reliability.
If you think classifying the 15-22 as "restricted" is idiotic, try this on for size. The rcmp (I can't bring myself to capitalize it) has decreed that the Blazer .22 rifle in the guise of an AK-47 is "prohibited", not even "restricted".
Why? because it could be easily be mistaken for a REAL AK-47 by someone who doesn't know guns.
This is what happens when a government allows a national police force to determine arbitrarily what guns citizens can own based on calibre, colour, action type, magazine capacity and barrel length.
Further to this insanity, I also have a Tavor which is NOT classified "restricted" (yet) that I can take into the bush.
"Gun control" laws like this achieve nothing but to breed contempt for bad law.
