I am looking for a good holster for a S&W 27-2 3.5”. A great gun needs a good holster. On two extremes there is the style like a Milt Sparks PMK which seems to have the pistol ride fairly low and then on the other end there is something like the Galco Silhouette which rides very high. What holster do you like that conceals something like a Model 27 3.5” best?

Barranti CCR

What about the Barranti CCR? It looks nice and simple but doesn’t look like it would hold the pistol in tight to the body.

I'd go for the Milt Sparks PMK for two reasons.

It appears that the revolver cylinder is in line with the gun belt which is optimal for carry balance and speed draw.

I have a Galco Fletch high rise holster that I'm not happy with for the above mentioned reasons.

The PMK is a good looking holsters too!

I've had the best luck with Simply Rugged pancakes with inside out straps. I can easily hide an Nframe IWB with it, or with the heavier clothes during winter they disappear when worn on the belt. Rob's design keeps the gun close to your body when worn either way.

With large frame revolvers a good pancake design makes for the best combination of comfort and concealment. I prefer to carry at about 4:00 position, just behind the strong side hip, with about 15-degrees butt-forward cant. Lots of good pancake designs out there like the Simply Rugged, El Paso Saddlery, and my own designs (still in production by the current owners).

I generally recommend against the very high-ride designs. When the revolver cylinder is above the upper belt-line the weight is less well supported and has a tendency to tip out away from the body, compromising security, concealment, and comfort.

A good sturdy belt helps a lot with the heavier handguns, and the Model 27 will be about 2.5 lbs. loaded.

I have a Milt Sparks PMK for my 3 inch 686 and it is great. I may get one for my pre-27 as well.

A very nice example in crossdraw, or a foolish person could wear it at 2:00 to 1:00. The cylinder being coplanar with the belt is ideal. And when you do that, you can ignore the foolish advice to 'get a good gunbelt' which applies only to top-heavy holsters, which this one is not.

My holster is not a cross draw, but is a strong side holster. I have several Milt Sparks holsters and they are a favorite. I'm expecting 2 more to arrive today. 😀

Red, What are those grips on the 686? I would like some for my 696. Thanks much, Tom

Do you mean my 686? Those are VZ combats that I put medallions in.

I'm still trying to learn something every day. Today I learned a new word "coplanar", never heard that one before.

Maybe one of these days I will stop learning. Either I will know everything or people can shovel dirt on my face and I won't even notice.

There are many great holster makers, so you have lots to choose from. However, a lot of them are backlogged so you'll have a wait quite a while to get your holster. I needed a holster for my 3" 686 Plus, and I didn't want to wait a long time or pay a lot of money (since the holster wouldn't be used that often or for EDC). I went with 1791 Gunleather. Just another option.

They look like VZ black cherry 320s with added S&W medallions. I have a set in gray/black on my 3” 66 and a set of black cherry on my 625-6 mountain gun.

I have another set with medallions that will probably go on my 25-13 Mountain Gun. The VZ combats fit my hands nicely.

Two OWB holsters I’ve enjoyed for use carrying a 3.5” Model 27: a Milt Sparks PMK (which, for my taste, rode lower than I preferred) and a Kramer Belt Scabbard (which was right about perfect for me).
