S&W 317 trigger reset problem

My 317 airweight .22LR trigger will occasionally fail to fully reset. The cylinder will index halfway but the hammer will not fully retract then fall. I'd appreciate any ideas on the source of the problem. Not sure if this might be a solution, but I went to the Midway USA website and found rebound springs for the 317 but cannot find 317 specific cylinder stop spring. Do all J frames use the same cylinder stop spring?

May I suggest that if you have not done so already, a good internal cleaning and lube may correct a gummed up action. I have "repaired" J frames this way. If that doesn't correct the problem, Wolff sells the needed springs. Apex sells a spring/ firing pin kit that will improve your trigger pull.

If you don't let the trigger come all the way forward on the reset, it won't work right. This is called "short stroking".

Hi Protocall, I bought one of your excellent hammers for my L Frame love it! Roger short stroking, I don't think that is the problem since I do quite a bit of dry fire (using drywall inserts for the rimfire 317) without issues and suddenly this started to happen even when I consciously let the trigger all the way forward to reset. This is an older pre lock 317 so I'm hoping new springs will resolve it. I also thought the aluminum cylinder notches might have been worn down my a steel cylinder stop. Do you know if the cylinder stop spring is that same for all J frames, rimfire, centerfire, etc.?

I'm not a J frame expert, but I think all the cyl. stop springs are the same. Thanks for the good review!

It sounds like something changed inside. I could be a broken hammer stud, although rare. Have you taken the sideplate off?

Bingo! Nightowl you called it. The hammer block safety was sheared off near the oval hole. Searched all the usual places, Midway, Brownells, Midwest, etc. N and K frame hammer blocks abound but no one seems to have the j frame ones in stock, I wonder if they break more often. Called S&W they will not send/sell me one and suggested "third parties". The search continues...

I can send you one if you are unable to find a replacement. I would check flea-bay for sure. There are a lot of used parts there.
