Mine is a 1 7/8" pinned barrel, m36, #11653. I have no idea about where to find a dash, any help? Besides, what is the difference? :D Randy

If it is stamped "Mod 36" in the yoke and there is no dash and number after the "36", then it a "36 (no dash)". If it says "Mod 36-1", etc., then that is the dash number. FYI, the dashes are just engineering changes of that particular model. Can't remember at what serial number they started Chief's Specials with the 'Mod 36" but it was circa 1957. If your Chief's Special isn't stamped "Mod 36" in the yoke, then it is a Chief's Special and not a Model 36. Some would (incorrectly) call it a pre-Model 36.

M36 s/n

I got that number inside the frame, on the butt it reads: J138088. Inside the frame it reads: MOD.36, any idea when it was made? Thanks for all the info, Randy

I'm no expert, but if the J is in the serial number somewhere, those are early 70's. I have a model 38 with the "floating J" serial

The catalog puts J100000 to J250000 in 1973/74, so for J138088 I would think 1973 is a safe bet.
