I have owned my 3953 for over 20 years and am looking to get some rubber grips for it. Can anyone suggest some grips that they have used on a 3953. Is the grips for a 3913 and 3953 the same? I went to a local gun store and saw Hogue grips for a 3913 and I asked the shop if they would fit on a 3953..all I got from him was "I have no idea".

Also, are there any aftermarket sights for these guns?

Yes, the Hogue grips for the 3913 will fit the 3953. I have both and both have the Hogue rubber grips. They are not pretty but provide excellent control.

3953 grips

I have a 3914 with Hogues and a 3953 with the original plastic grips. I've looked at swapping them, since I shoot the 3953 more, but there's some sort of a pin arrangement to remove them from the 3953, and so far I haven't done it, for fear of having the embarrassment of taking it to the local smith with a dumb look on my face when I can't get them back on right. :o

The stock and the Hogue grips install differently, but will interchange without difficulty. If I try to explain it I'll only confuse you more. Tap that pin out from either side and remove the stock grips then remove the Hogues and you'll understand immediately how they work.

I tried a set of Hogue rubber grips years ago on my Smith 6450 (RSR transitional between 645 and 4506. I aboslutely loved the grips so much that I also added them on my wife's 3914 and on my 4516-2. They are nice and tacky if you have sweaty palms and they help to absorb some of the recoil on the .45's.

I tried a set of Hogues on my 4046 but they were too wide over the stock grips. So... I decided to stay with the stock grips on all of my double stack Smith's and I have the Hogues on the single stacks.

Enjoy!

Thanks, will have a look this weekend and let you know how it goes.

Ok, I was able to remove both sets of grips without trouble. However, inside the hard plastic grips, there's a cup to capture the bottom of the mainspring end. On the pistol with the Hogues, the bottom of the grips don't have the cup to capture the spring end. There is a plastic piece already at the bottom of the frame that stays in place when you remove the Hogues to capture the bottom of the spring. There's a pin holding it in place, but I wasn't able to remove it.

Can this come out and be moved to the other pistol to be able to accept these Hogue grips, and are there any other grips that have this piece? I should say the Hogues come apart in halves, while the plastic grips on the 3953 are one piece and wrap around the backstrap.

thanks
