Does anyone have an idea of the production dates and production numbers for the S&W 4040PD? I've heard 2003-2005 and 2003-2007 for production dates.

ACEd, now that you have seen a few more box end codes, (including BAW0001,) have you sensed any total production numbers?

The BAW1042 I got a few years ago left Tuesday 27 January 04. BAM0001 left Wednesday 14 January 04. I understand manufacture vs shipping but the number of 1040 shipped in 9 work days, (Jan '04,) seems like a bunch considering the comments, "rare", "limited", and "very few have so use the 4040 mags in 3913's" and such. 🤡

That was my comment. I tried for a long time to find a nice condition 4040PD, and found ZERO of them for sale, while easily finding "rare" pistols like the Recon 45, Recon 9, 845, etc for sale (and bought a couple).
I don't have numbers for production of the 4040PD, but one would think that they would show up for sale more often than, say, never.

No idea of total production but I can account for 16, which oddly enough is more than the 12 4014s I can account for and I like 4014s.

As to BAW prefixes, I know of 7 pistols between BAW0001 and BAW1042 but only 5 are 4040PD. Others are an import marked 3953TSW and a 4006TSW - so clearly not all BAW0001-1042 were 4040PD.

Other 4040PD prefixes include 8 VJL between VJL2799 (2003) and VJL9367 (unk date); the 5 BAW you mention (early 2004); 2 BAY (late 2004 both 4279 code); and would you believe a KAP (no date).

The BAY prefix and date codes put them in a mix of 3913TSW, 908S, 3914TSW, 4046, and CS40. I know of no other KAP prefix of any type, but the VJLs are the most common and are well mixed with at least 9 other models. So I would not conclude there was any S/N grouping by model or contract.

Been following 4040PD's for a while, here is what I've found (lowest and highest observed serial number per prefix):

BAW0007 - BAW3327: 11 units
BAY4631 - BAY4651: 4 units
BDH4431 - BDH4434: 2 units
BDJ7149
KAP0001
VJJ8481
VJL2752 - VJL9385: 27 units

If I did a really deep dive with google-fu I might be able to dig up a few more.

You can add BAW0001

Here is a 4040PD for research ----
Serial Number KAP0001 per SW Manufacture Date 8/2013.
Ship Date 8/2013 per Roy to "Employee Store"

Anyone else ever seen any 3rd Generation with KAP prefix?
