I received a S&W 4046 as a Christmas gift. What do I need to know about this model?

It's a double action only in .40S&W caliber. Stainless steel frame and slide. Weighs about 38oz. 10 or 11 round magazine. No double-strike capability (if the round is a dud, you can't pull the trigger again without racking the slide and resetting the trigger; kind of like a Glock or an M&P). Produced '91-'99.

A good, solid .40 service pistol.

According to the Standard Catalog, there are only about seven variations. All of the above info is from the Standard Catalog.

Hope this helps!

Lube up the trigger mechanism with some 'Break-free' oil will help the trigger mechanism smooth up.

I own a 4046. It is a police surplus pistol in exceptionally good shape. Mine has been 100% reliable. I think that it is a very fine design but not every shooter will be happy with it. The trigger is about 10 pounds but is relatively short and very smooth, at least on mine.

A revolver shooter would feel right at home with the trigger because it is an even better trigger than is found on a good revolver. The gun conceals pretty well and can be carried, but after a while the 38 ounces can start to get a little heavy. I find it is ok up to about 8 hours and I don't think I would want to carry it every day.

Yep..big sturdy pistols. The 'hi-cap' mags are only 11 shot...so the old PC 10 shot mags ain't much of a handicap.

I can recall only one failure of any sort from mine...and it was a failure to extract with some old funky reloads. never an issue before or since.

Mine is a police trade too..and has a set of night sites already installed...Think mine is a 1990 or 91 made pistol. A quality piece of hardware.

I have the 4043 and 4044 which are essentially the same pistol only with alloy frames, not stainless like yours. Your 4046 should be a good shooter and last a long time. Enjoy!

Old thread new question....

My LGS has two S&W 4046 pistols, they both have "Tactical 40" on the slide. The store says they were LEO trade in's... Both have the DAO trigger. I did'nt take pics at the time however they are in decent condition, no nics or scratches, just a lil' holster wear. They are both all stainless. I didnt ask what they were asking for. But the pistols got me curious. I dont own a full sized pistol & if the price is right I may consider one of these 4046 models. What would be a decent price for a used 4046?

My other choice was to buy a new M&P 9/40.

The main purpose of the pistol would be a combo of range, IDPA & home defense.

A police trade in this area goes for $350 - $450 depending on condition and popularity. For instance a 45acp would be more popular, so would the tactical model and the DA/SA model. 40s&w in a 3rd gen S&W with a DAO trigger would be least popular but it is a TSW (Tactical S&W) which were built to tighter tolerances so I'd split the difference and say $400
