Local guy has one for sale. Wood is good, but dull. Finish is badly worn. Almost none left, but no pitting either.
What can you tell me bout it? Value?

They are not as well made as the S&W 3000. I bought one a couple of years ago in Tulsa for around a buck fifty. It was a little worn and seemed to function OK when I got it. When I got home I found out the firing pin was broken, the fix was about $40.00 and I had to go through three of them until I could find one that worked. I have been told that this wasn't an unusual problem. I sold it for what I had in it after telling the buyer about the firing pin. I have two nice model 3000's and several other brands now and have no need for a 916.

As I recall, the 3000 is basically a clone of the Browning BPS, is it not? Nice gun..

I believe it is more a Remington 870 clone. (The BPS has bottom ejection, more like the Ithaca Model 37.)

Edit: Not a Remington 870 clone. The S&W Model 1000P (later named the Model 3000) are the Remington clones. Apologies for the confusion.

I've had a 916T for about 45 years. It was my first real gun purchase when I was 19. I believe it was made by Stevens, and it ran $119.99 in 1977 dollars. The model as a whole wasn't really seen as of the highest quality but mine has always served me well. I used it on a number of deer over the years and have a slug barrel mounted on it now. I can't imagine what I have is worth much but I reckon it will always be in my collection.

Thanks. I saw it for sale and got curious. I don't need another shotgun. My only interest was that its a S&W. Asking price is $200, I'll pass.

S&W bought the NOBLE firearms company that made that pump and other firearms. Then they renamed the pump their 916........Funny thing when Noble made them there were not many complaints about them.

This was actually designed by the late great Npble firearms company. My first bad buy as a newbie forty years ago. Bought it and an RG "lead shaver" tm from the same bozo. Traded it for a boltless winchester 67a.

I have one of these and I have a question as to it's operation. With the action closed, you cannot open it unless you depress the slide lock button to the left, rear of the trigger guard. The action can then be opened but if you close it you must press the slide lock again, even if you pull the trigger the action will not open until you depress the slide lock button. Normal operation? if so I assume it functions differently with ammunition in it.
Please forgive my total ignorance, I am not a shotgun guy.

After you pull the trigger try pushing the pump handle forward. That should unlock the action, when you fire the gun with live ammo the recoil will unlock the action automatically.

That's what I thought too, but it doesn't work. Must be some thing hanging up.

I have rebuilt two broken 916 firing pins from two different guns. One of which is from my 916. It is not too difficult if you have access to a small lathe. Disassembly of the action to get to the firing pin is more difficult than repairing the firing pin. Aside from that, I have no complaints about my 916.

So I have fired this shotgun and the action will not unlock so as to cycle and fire another shell from the magazine tube. I can depress the action lock and the action will open, extract and eject the empty and them will feed another round. when the shotgun is fired again it will not unlock until the release is pressed. Anyone have a clue as to why?
