I'm pretty close to retirement age and find I'm sentimental about some things. One of the big ones is S&Ws, especially those I've handled and carried.

I started out as a part time copper almost 25 years ago, and carried my personally owned Gen 1 Glock 22. I used it in the academy, carried it off duty, and it served me well when I worked on the Drug Task Force. I briefly tried an Intratec CAT-9, but it was as reliable as a broken HiPoint, so I dumped it.

The day I made full time, the chief forced me to carry a 4006. It carried the same round as my G22, but man was it a different animal! Twice as heavy in carry and trigger weight, a DA/SA with decocker instead of the more consistent striker, different sights, stainless instead of Tenifer, completely different stripping and reassembly procedure and less rounds. I hated it.

Our firearms instructor was a S&W armorer and fanatic. With his patient instruction, I learned to shoot my 4006 well and appreciate other S&W semi-autos and ALL revolvers. I shot and enjoyed his 39, 908, 457, 3913, several PCs & TSWs, as well as numerous J, K, L, & N frames. While I never grew to love my 4006, I was confident in my ability to use it and grateful for his guidance and willingness to be my mentor.

We slowly transitioned to Sigs starting in the early 2000's. I became a firearm instructor myself and took over most of the training. My mentor recently retired, and I bought several of his Smiths I enjoyed over the years.

One he won't part with is his 4006. I'd like to have one, but I'm looking at a CHP4006 as well. But the Smith semi-autos I've always wanted, and who's silhouettes are the sexiest to me, are the 2nd & 3rd Gens with the adjustable sights and square trigger guards. I've seen 5906s & 5903s I'd love to have. Anyone know if any of the 40cals had both features?

I'd appreciate anyone willing to sell a 2nd or 3rd gen with both the adjustable sights and squared trigger guard to PM me and help a guy find a dream gun.

Interesting side note: My agency switched from personally owned revolvers in the 80's to the 1006 in the very early 90's. Apparently they had numerous issues with the 10mms and they had "disagreements" with Smith & Wesson about replacing them. Rob Dibble, a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds at the time, stepped up and purchased then--new 4006s, mags and duty gear for every officer.

A 5906 shouldn't be too hard to find. Maybe on Gunbroker? Disclaimer: I've never bought anything on Gunbroker.

The square trigger guard was a carry-over from related 2nd Gens models.

Since the 3rd Gen 4006 was a new model, & cartridge (when it came out in 1990) and the square trigger guard was short lived on the 3rd Gens models that did start off with them in 1988, I'm unaware off any standard production 4006, or it's cousins, that had them.

The experimental prototype for the 40 S&W did have a square trigger guard (likely a modified 5906).

The 4006 pilot production models had already been changed to a rounded trigger guard by late 1989/early 1990.

The S&W 4006 CHP version is awesome. It has everything you want in a 3rd Generation Gun: built in picatinney rail, bobbed hammer, and de cocker instead of safety. Fantastic gun
