Welcome to the Forum.

We need more info. Is this number, 496861, taken from the butt of the revolver? Are there any letter prefixes, like a "V", "C", "S", "D", or a "K" in front of the digits?

Please post pictures. At the least, all of the markings that appear on your gun.

BTW, "ctg" is an abbreviation for "cartridge". It is NOT part of the revolver's name or model designation.

Welcome to the forum.

First off, CTG isn't the model of an S&W revolver, but merely an abbreviation for the word 'cartridge'. What are the numbers are stamped at the beginning of that marking on the barrel? That would tell us the caliber. We'd also need as much other info as you can give us to make a positive ID on your gun.

Also, is 496861 the number from the butt of the grip frame?

If I were to venture a guess, I'd say you 'might' have a .38 M&P (Military & Police) from the early 1920's.

Tell us more and we can tell you more. Pics would help a lot too. ;)

Fortunately cartridges, abbreviated by S&W as "CTG" when labeling the caliber of their revolvers, do not have serial numbers, in spite of some anti-gunners' best efforts.

What you probably have is a revolver of some sort. Welcome to the S&W forum and if you will provide a little more information about your revolver (or semi-auto, or whatever) including caliber, number of rounds in cylinder (or magazine) finish, barrel length, etc. and perhaps even a picture if you can, one of the members of this forum will be able to tell you very quickly just what it is that you have.

Regards,
Froggie

PS Be sure and give the serial number from the butt off the gun and indicate whether there are any letters stamped with (or near) the serial number. They make a difference as S&W reused serial numbers several times by adding the letters.

I'm going with the odds and saying it's a Military & Police Model from around 1925.

Six shot swing out cylinder in 38 Special? See above.
