S&W M&P 15 Sport Scope Install

Just bought me a 15 sport this past Saturday. Installed a cheap SR22 scope that I had and got it patterned pretty good. I had this scope installed past the charge handle and I was able to pull the charge handle but it was harder to get to because of the scope mount position. Today I purchased a Nikon P223 and got the P223 mounts (free ). I installed the scope even with the charge handle. The eye relief for the scope is 3.6 inches which allowed me to mount it flush to the charge handle and still be a few inches back and still have a clear view. My dad would not shoot the gun because he thought the SR22 scope would hit him in his prescript glasses. The eye relief on that scope sucked. I have a Nikon P22 on my rimfire gun and he loved that scope and that has a few inches of eye relief. He saw the P223 scope and said he would shoot the gun now since he could see the scope better from farther away. LOL!
My question is how did you all install your scope, flush with the charger handle or past the charge handle?
I am use to scopes being further back with a balance scope to gun look. It looks kind of strange to me how I got the P223 mounted, but it works.

I am a nose to charging handle shooter as taught in the military, so if I had that scope, it would probably be mounted forward of the charging handle, provided I could get the eye relief and keep the mount on the receiver.

I mount the scope flush with the charge handle. It allows access to the charge handle and some leeway in head position.

I do the nose to the charge handle thing when I shoot irons or a red dot.

My P223 with Nikon mounts:

Mine is just forward of flush.

I shoot nose-to-charging handle.

I didn't think a recoiling AR was a problem for scope bite...dang thing doesn't kick for nothin'. On my NEF 45-70 it's a big problem (!), that's why I went with a Nikon shotgun hunter scope on that thumper - eye relief is way more generous on that one...

Dullh, my dad saw when I shot it and thought it kicked. I told him it didn't. He wouldn't believe me. I asked him if he wanted to shoot the 30.06, he declined. LOL

javelin225ho, I don't want to spend your money, but maybe look at replacing the charging handle with something larger and easier to grip if you want to keep the scope mounted the way you have it? Look at the BCM line of charging handles they extend out farther and make it really easy to grab. Look at the BCM Mod 3 or 4 handle....great products and they work really well.

I looked at that Nikon scope, but went with a Primary Arms 2.5x because I can still co-witness my irons. With the Nikon if you want back ups you need to mount them on a 45.

I put this on my charging handle. Makes it easy to get at if your scope is mounted further back. It's a lot cheaper than a new charging handle. $17.29

I have a sport 15 and I just put the Nikon P223 scope on it and I mounted mine foward of the charge handle. Javelin225 can you see your front sight through your scope? I can on mine and I'm fixing to take it off and put a low profile gas block in its place.

I have the Nikon P223 slightly forward of the charging handle 1/4" at most. I cannot see my front sight through my scope. It is not at all in the way.

Maybe I have mine too far foward then. I will move it back and see if that helps.

My P-223 3x32 is flush with the charging handle; maybe actually set in just a little bit. I went with the American Defense QD mount for it, though, and it's friggin' amazing.

No I dont see the front sight on mine even at 3x mag. Did you use the p223 mounts?

No i didn't and that's probably where my prob is. I ordered the scope off eBay and it didn't come with a mount so I got some heavy duty 20mm rise mounts from my LGS.

All of mine with scopes are flush to the charging handle with fold down BUIS under the rear of the scope.

I have a M&P 15 Sport also and am wondering since I really in all my years shooting been just your standard Iron sight shooter and am not bad with irons but have been thinking about using a scope on my M&P 15, any suggestions about what brand what magnification and what mount. Like I said just been a iron shooter all these years and the eyes are not as good as they used to be. I do have pics on here of my sport with a scope but that was a cheapo that just broke I got it for a gift they paid like $40 dollars for it but I have read that if you want a really good optic you are going to pay. I got about a $150-$200 dollar budget for a optic.

your scope is the correct position, but your rings are backwards, the can't forward.

At least that is how the Warne Ring/Mounts go

This is my setup. I use a UTG QD mount with a riser which works perfect with the P-223 scope. Since I took the picture, I've moved the mount forward about an inch. The front bolt is in the most forward slot in the upper. Eye relief is just right as I shoot with the stock fully extended.

I don't recall seeing any arrows pointing "this end forward" on the mount. If it holds your scope on your rifle at the proper eye relief, then it's on the correct way.

Now, if this were a tapered mount that had a built in MOA adjustment, then you would be correct. There would be a front and a back to the mount and one specific way that it goes on, but this is not the case with mine or with the Nikon P-223 mount that Dullh has.

But hey, this is just one mans opinion, and we all know those vary like the weather.
