My neighbor brought over a S&W M&P 9mm magazine with the numbers 1-7 stamped on the mag body. Said he could not get it reassembled. Did get it assembled but when I tried to load it the floor plate went flying off. This particular magazine has the plastic sub floor plate with the two nibs on one side and the small tab that locks into the floor plate. I can get it assembled but as soon as I load or attempt to load it the baseplate comes off. Tried you tube videos so I know I'm doing it right. Mag spring seems excessively strong for so few rounds. Anyone have any ideas as to these magazines??. Thanks,Frank

Sounds like it is the small base magazine for a Shield 9, and there is something broken with the plastic baseplate. Photos may help here.

Odd, I've not had issues with any of my Shield mags after reassembly.

Perhaps a few pics will help.

Carefully check the floor/base plate to make sure there are no cracks and the slots the mag body slides into are intact.

Check the flanges on the mag body to make sure they are straight and the mag body is not bowed in.

Make sure the floor plate sits flush and tight to the mag body.

And make sure the locking plate fully seats in the floor plate.

Saudade and others. OK checked the fit of the main floorplate on the mag body, tight fit. floorplate/base plate does not show anything that it could not be reassembled as Saudade's photo's. base plate fits very snugly and does require some force to pull it off after pushing that little tab. In short all the requirementa as shown have been met, and yet as soon as you try to load any cartridges the base oplate comes out. Frank

Shouldn't require any force once the tab is pressed in on the spring plate.. That base plate slides out with ease. Sounds like the base plate was ruined while removing it initially

It appears that the floorplate is not fully engaging the flanges on the bottom of the magazine tube. If the flanges show no sign of damage (compare to Saudade's photos above), it could be that the plastic floorplate has weakened/softened/broken to the point that pressure from inserting rounds can push it off the flanges. As murphydog says, photos would help.

I've attached a couple of close-up photos of my (good) floorplate from my 1.0 Shield 9 so you can make a comparison.

I can only suggest you post some pictures as well.

Just a thought, could he have had a couple of mags taken apart at the same time and put the wrong spring in it? Not sure it would matter but would a spring for an 8rd. mag, put in a 7rd. mag for instance, put too much pressure on the base plate when rounds are loaded? It sounds more like the base plate is buggered up.

I don't believe a spring that is to stiff would force a bottom plate off. They are better made than that. I don't think ones thumb would be strong enough to load the 1st round if so. I am guessing either the plate is damaged, maybe even a hairline crack that isn't visible or it is for the wrong gun.

Are the 9mm and 40 Shield magazines the same dimensions? Maybe the 40 mag is slightly wider and that base is what is on that 9??

Probably the most direct solution is a call to customer service; I would guess they would just send out a replacement magazine.
