The other day I contacted S&W customer service to ask about a preventative maintenance parts replacement schedule for the M&P Shield.

The only guidance/recommendations they provide is for the Law Enforcement Community--and that is listed below. Thought it might be of interest to all who use their Shields for EDC:

M&P SHIELD MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE (Law Enforcement)

1 Year/5,000 Rounds:
Replace RSA
Mags: Replace followers and springs

10,000 Rounds:
Replace Trigger Return Spring
Replace Trigger Bar Assembly
Replace Striker Assembly
Replace Frame Coil Pins

What law enforcement agencies carry a Shield?

Looks like S&W better stock up on RSAs.

Thanks, of course the question here is; would (or should) the schedule be any different for non LEO? And a newby question; what is an RSA?

Recoil spring assembly.

Another thing to remember, the recommendations to agencies are to insure the pistols work 100%, and they also make money on the replacement parts (sometimes more profit than the original sale price of the pistols). I shoot competition, and while it may be discouraging, a part failure in a match is not critical. I have different schedules depending on which pistol I'm shooting (major vs minor power factor ammo). I have one gun with over 70K rounds on it that I've only changed the trigger return spring and the slide lock due to breakage. (it was my minor gun, the major is much harder on parts:eek: )

Well, since the RSA has no wear unless it's being used, unless you average 100rounds/week, which I doubt many LEOs do in a pistol, I'd stretch that replacement schedule out a LOT.

I have a Walther PPK and a Beretta 1934 that my father brought home from WWII. they have original mags, which still load, feed and recover fine as do the rest of the parts in those pistols (they were brought to the US 70 years ago).

I wouldn't worry about replacing parts until they broke, as Dandecoteau so clearly expressed in an earlier comment.

I am just putting out the manufacturer's recommendation for anybody who, like me, was interested.

This is from S&W...and is probably in their proposals to potential "official" customers (my words, not theirs).

For those of you who may be familiar with general aviation (private small aircraft in particular) it is similar to requirements commercial operators of such aircraft must follow that do not apply to private individuals who own and operate such aircraft.

I've got 3,500 rounds through my Shield and I do shoot 150-200 rounds weekly. So yeah, I am interested in what the manufacturer recommends regarding preventive parts replacement on my EDC. Range gun only...then not so much.

I can understand a few of the items like the cast MIM striker and the mag springs if they weaken. The frame coil springs hold the slide rails to the frame so they can weaken as well, which are 1/8" x 7/8" by the way. I wonder why the cast MIM sear isn't mentioned ?
