I've been shooting Glocks since the early 1990's. I like them and they have served me well.

Lately I have been on a "buy US made products" kick, and would like to get some info on the S&W M&P line of pistols. How do they compare to Glocks on reliability, trigger pull, amount of cleaning required, and the abuse they can handle.

I have a G22 which I never clean or oil, can take it to the range and put 200-300 rds thru it without any failures at all. This G22 has gone thru thousands of rds since I bought it. I did clean it when I first got it, usually after every trip to the range, but decided to quit cleaning it a few years ago.

Will the M&P line of pistols perform this well?

So you have a bmw, you never change the Oil but it runs good. Now you want to know if you can get a chevy and do the same thing without an issue? Short term, sure why not. Long term.... Probably not a good idea.

Im pretty sure smith recommends having a clean gun. But i bet theres more than a few m&p's out there that have never been cleaned and shot alot.

JUST GOT MINE

I just got a 40 m&p and have fired 500 rounds w/o cleaning and no problems so far! it is incredibly accurate and i LOVE THE HELL OUT OF IT!!!
I AM GETTING A 9MM FS IN AUGUST ALSO!
THEN I WOULD LIKE THE SHIELD!!!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'm glad to hear someone is interested in buying U.S.-made products. If more people shared your view, we probably wouldn't find ourselves where we are (you be the judge of just where that is).

I think you will find the M&Ps comparable. They have been, in my limited experience.

Modern ammunition is pretty clean, but why not clean the gun every so often? It is no great burden. I actually find the M&P a little easier to strip than the Glock design. People complain about the sear lever, but really, how hard is it to reach down there and push the thing forward with the blade of your pocketknife, or whatever you have handy? If you are averse to bore brushes and cleaning rods, how about one of those bore snakes? They're pretty simple. A little cleaning after every 500 rounds or so can't hurt.

Glock vs S & W M&P

I carried a glock 33 for several years as a Detective. The gun was ok, but I just never felt comfortable with it. I had a safety installed but the gun felt like a brick in my hand. It did shoot well with very few problems. I sold it!
I am retired now and I still enjoy shooting. I have the M & P C, the Shield, and the 380 Bodyguard, along with the M & P 22. They are all nice guns and all work great. Compairing the M & P C, to the glock, the M & P is much more comfortable to hold and shoot. Accuracy is about the same, with no problems. Right now in my opinion S & W is turning out some great guns! I have to say that I carry the shield more than any other.

M29since14,
Actually I've been buying American made most of my life. I had 3 imported cars back in the 1970's, all British sports cars. I did buy foreign bikes when I first started riding, then switched to Harley's. I owned an H&K pistol, and a coulpe of Sigs, then the Glocks. Most of the handguns I own now are American made, 4 Smiths, 1 Ed Brown, 1 Colt. The rest are Glocks. All the long guns I have are American made.

I found a site online where I can buy American made clothes.

I would like some long term reports on the M&P pistols because I want to replace the Glocks, but do not want to put out the cash until I'm sure of the M&P's track record.

In our local matches we have a mixture of M&Ps and Glocks, of these two the ones I see having the most problems are unfortunately the M&Ps. I much prefer the M&P grip but with all the problems I am seeing I would lean toward the Glock if I had to buy another pistol.

As for buying American cars, I have two - a Hyundai assembled in Montgomery, AL and a Nissian assembled in Smyrna,TN. :) My last Ford had so many components assembled outside of the US I had a hard time considering it American made.

I have had several Glocks, in three frame sizes and two calibers, but I really never got comfortable with them. They fascinate me for some reason, but maybe it's because I've seen so many YouTube torture videos.

Anyway, I recently picked up a S&W M&P40c, and I really like it. The trigger is better, and it fits my hand like it was made for it. I haven't shot it much so far, but I love it.

Others may differ, but I like a safety on a semi auto, and I ordered my Smith that way.

Try one, you'll be pleased, I'm sure.

I've heard the horror stories on both sides. Gen 4 Glocks are not reliable, or M&P pistols will jam more, etc... But I've also heard both sides rave about the reliability of their gun of choice.

Also, guns are not like other products that lose a ton of value once they are purchased. I say purchase an M&P, and if it doesn't hold up to your standards, go ahead and sell it, I don't think you'll be out too much monexy.

I also think you'll be happ with an M&P. Did you see the M&P torture test?

M&P Torture Test

62,333 rounds 2 stoppages, 0 malfunctions, 3 parts breakages

You should probably clean your gun once in a while. Not after every trip to the range but occationally is a good idea. Yes, it's always been very reliable but not cleaning it will reduce the overall life as parts do wear out. How long will your Glock last? 60K rounds? 100k Rounds? 500k Rounds? Who knows but not oiling it will quicken how many rounds are able to go through it before parts start wearing out.

My wife and I have a Glock 34 Gen4 and an M&P9c and M&P22. The M&P seems a little pickier about ammo, but they are both better and more accurate guns than we are shooters. I really prefer the M&P grip and takedown. My wife prefers the slide on the Glock. Since we found ammo that both the 9mms like, we've had zero failures.

My experience so far would put the Glock as a total package at 98/100 and the M&P at 95/100. The Glock (Gen3 and older) I've had zero issues with and my Glock 21 has well over 6,000 rounds in about 2 years and those were all shot in IDPA during all sorts of weather conditions and she never missed a beat. Every other Glock I've ever owned or shot functioned the same way, just about perfectly.

The M&Ps I have had a bit of trouble but nothing that would stop me from recommending them to anyone. My M&P9 Pro had a small issue of rust but I was using a terrible holster that just flat wore the finish off of it and my M&P45 would fail to feed about 90% of the time, but only due to a terribly sharp bur on the underside of the extractor. Once I used some 400 grit sandpaper and took off the bur, it's been 100%. My M&P9c is working towards 500+ rounds in the 2 months I've owned it and my 2nd M&P45 FDE frame hasn't been shot that much but it still ran perfectly. The M&P9 Pro I've had for a year and it is fast approaching 2,000 rounds and it's never failed to feed, extract, fire or eject and is a fantastic shooter. My M&P45 that had the bur is going on 1,000 rounds without an issue and is my primary carry and IDPA competition gun. The M&P9c is my warm-weather carry gun and hasn't missed a beat in the time I've had it.

I think the Glock is a touch simpler and the finish on the slide is a bit more resilient than the M&P's finish but I would take either. I will always love Glock's pistols, especially my big Glock 21, but I now have more M&Ps than Glocks and don't regret the switch.

Stopped at the LGS after leaving the LGC and checked out the 40 M&P in CS & RS. Decided against buying a M&P after watching the clerk field strip the RS. I'll stick with my Glocks, thank you very much.

I sure would not base a decision on what to buy from anything I saw or heard at a LGS.

Hello Wrong way, I'll buy all the Glocks you own !! The OD's on a hart beat ! [email protected]
Thanks,
George

I own both S&W and Glock handguns. My cc weapon of choice is my Glock 23. It's easier to strip down compared to my Smith's. All my handguns are accurate as it all depends on the shooter but my preference leans towards the Glock's.

What did you not like?

The first thing I didn't like was the lock. I looked at the standard and compact, and both had locks. I have a gun safe to store my firearms, why the lock?

What's with the disconnector which has to be depressed to field strip. Not needed.

The finish on the slide didn't appear as durable as the Glocks.

The use of roll pins thru the frame instead of solid pins.

The whole pistol looked like it was supposed to be a major improvement over the Glocks design, and in my opion failed everywhere except the grip. I loved the grip.

The rifling was the standard type used in every firearm since barrels were rifled.

The price was better than the Glocks, I could have walked out with a M&P for well under 5 bills.

I could go on, but whats the point. I have many Glocks which have proven to be reliable and easy to maintain.

End of story!

My carry weapon is a G23. I dont like the fact that it doesnt have a decocker or firing pin safety, and the trigger could be better. But for me it was a compromise between round density, weight and consealability. When I bought my Glock 23, the M&P line didnt exist and a lot of the other poly guns like the XD/XDm, etc

I have had no real reason to replace it yet.

I went with the M&P simply because I don't like the look and feel of the glocks. This may change over time but right now that's how I feel. Also because it was like the slimmest 9mm out. Though I think my next purchase will be a full size or a 22.

Shield yourself...
