Hi, new member. I own a mdl 1917 Army. The gun is missing the butt swivel which I have just ordered. The question I have is in regard to the butt swivel hole, it is filled with a gray matter which appears to be lead. Could this have been done at the factory, or is this just something a prior owner did? Ser# 95xxx. If this plug was factory installed I would hesitate to remove it. Any info appreciated.

If it is in fact lead, I don't think the factory would have done the work. Equally unlikely the factory would have plugged the hole with anything.
Might post a pic. Here is the plugged hole on my .44 HE, 2nd Model. My gun was ordered without a swivel and I think most likely what I have was done at the factory.
Have also heard of the factory filling a hole later. Have been told that most of those installations are so smooth as to be almost indetectable.
I'm sure there are other installs that were not factory.
