I need some help. I want to put a 3" BBL on my 2" Mdl. 36. I have a 3" BBL, a BBL pin, a longer extractor rod for the 3" BBL, and a center pin of the correct length. The extractor rod for the 2" BBL has a flange on it to retain a spring. The longer 3" BBL extractor rod does not have a flange and does not retain the spring. Am I missing a part? Do I need different springs? I want to make sure I have all the necessary parts before taking the gum to my local gunsmith. Any help/advice would be appreciated. In years gone by I would just send the gun to S&W. Apparently they don't do too much barrel swapping anymore. Their Customer Service offered zero assistance.

You need a separate little flange piece. It looks like a tiny little top hat. Your 2" extractor rod has one, but it might be part of the rod itself depending on the vintage of the gun. The rod for your 3" barrel must be different vintage because it had a separate flange.

Have you taken the 2" rod apart? You can use it if it's a separate piece. Be sure to not which direction the flange was facing when you take it apart and assemble on the longer rod the same way.

Welcome to the forum.

There's a metal collar on the extractor rod that looks like a top hat; it's installed backwards.

Showing the "top hat" collar installed on the extractor rod, (but not necessarily the way yours should be:

Not all collars go in the same way.

When the top hat is in backwards, it lengthens the extractor star shaft which then gets pushed out the back of the cyl. by the yoke when the extractor rod is tightened and the cyl/yoke assembly is installed back into the frame.
