Hi,
I was wondering what a 28-2 with a S244XXX serial number would be worth and when it was made? I am in California and would like to keep it here.
It has a four inch barrel.Thanks.

condition and barrel length are two pretty big factors to address type of stocks can be another.
1964 should be the year made

You would really need to post some detailed pictures to get a proper assessment.

Pictures will definitely help determine a price. Selling in California will definitely get a premium, and being an S prefix serial may get a premium as well. Condition is the main factor though. A few months ago, I got my 28-2 in CA, 6 inch barrel, aftermarket stocks, serial number N274xxx in 92-95% condition for $750. Hope this helps

Barrel length will also make a difference, as well as originality (original stocks, original finish, ... ) and any extras (box, documents, tools, ... ).

I just bought one in 95%+ condition with the S pre-fix in a 4" bbl for $500. The gun has no box (I happen to have a correct box in the stack of extras) and came with Hogue rubbers (ugh). Fortunately,I also have more appropriate factory grips in my woodpile. All that said,I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't consider it a good price.
f.t.

Add 50% for the "California Premium." This gun is now C&R qualified being 50 years old so it would be legal to import and sell in CA (I don't want to be kicked out so I refrain from expressing my opinion on CA and its gun laws).

Condition? Box? Barrel length (4" brings more)? Original "diamond" stocks? Many variables.

Most likely Feb/March 1964, now let's see some PICS!

If people just want to see a 28 , I'll oblige. Of course mine is a hair too old for this forum. (1960) S2011xx. I do have a mint of factory target grips for it. This is the way it goes to the range. I bought this a few years back with goodyears on G.B. for $450. Bob

How about a few pic of the gun on some 36 grit sandpaper? :( I cringe whenever I see nice guns placed on rocks.

That one does look very nice. The $700 - $800 estimate is probably as good as any, especially considering the CA premium.
