Dear Smith and Wesson Forum I have a question about the s&w model 29 .44 magnum revolver. I know that Clint Eastwood used one when he played a police detective character in the dirty harry series of movies. but i would like to know was the model 29 ever actually issued to real life police officers? sincerely and respectfully mg357 a proud member of the Smith and Wesson Forum.
p.s. this is not for a writing project.

I can't speak on the issued part, but I know peace officers back in the 70's and 80's that were allowed to purchase and carry their own model 29's on-duty.

Some Departments use to offer alot more leeway on what officers were allowed to carry.

I was stopped by an Alaska State Trooper back in, I believe, 1982 who was carrying a 4" Model 29. Whether it was issued to him or a private purchase I have no idea.

A good friend of mine carried a 6" 629 on duty with the Dallas TX PD back in the 80s.
