S&W Model 41 magazines

I did not know that some had baseplates that are not removable, I have a newer one that the baseplate came off and I had to put it back together. More info would be most helpful.

thanks

S&W model 41 mags are a joke

the factory mags have a small pin extending out from the follower, used to pull the follower down. These will tear up your thumb or finger if you load them a lot without some type device to hold the follower down while doing so. The same mags fit the cheapy models 2206, 422 and 622. Why S&W puts out such a piece of junk magazine for one of their premium guns is beyond me....mags for the M&P22 are much superior in construction to those for the model 41 IMHO.

I bought a box of parts from another gunsmith, some Smith & Wesson parts were in the box along with these three magazines.

All have plastic followers, and only one of the three has that "E" roll-stamped into it. It appears that these magazines have a detent that gets pushed inward so that the floor plate can easily be removed for cleaning. Just trying to get some information on what they would be worth, in case a customer asks me.

Hey Aussie collector, the one I was talking about had no exposed pin and a plastic follower, the baseplate slid off and it took 3 hands to put it back together, I have not tried to take one apart.

Not sure Aussie, hopefully I won't have anymore come apart.

Do you know how to do the conversion?

Can you teach us, please?
Piece of cake

If you have one of the 12 round orange follower model 41 mags just look at it.

The black follower just needs to be shortened from the bottom and the slots in the mag body just need to be lengthened.

BINGO 12 rounds

I wanted a 12 round mag, as I didn't have any, quite rare here and I could not get anyone to post from the US. When a 2206 came up here with 4 mags, 2 being 12 shot I snapped it up. Then sold the the 2206 less 2 mags for the same price.

All of mine have the black plastic followers.

There are quite a few different Model 41 magazines. With the plastic follower there are variations also. For simplicity I will say there are 3 types of plastic follower mags;

1. 10 shot (black) plastic follower, exposed pin. Pre 1992
2. 12 shot (orange) plastic follower. 1992 ~ 1994
3. 10 shot (black) plastic follower no exposed pin. Post 1994

They all do come apart. Mag 1 & 2 push the base plate pin up and slide the follower out. Mag 3 you need to pull up the spring, lifting the internal pin from the base plate and slide it out. I use a dinner fork as it grabs the spring better than wire or screwdriver. Now with mag 3 if you do not get the pin back into the base plate its possible for it to slide out. This didn't cross my mind, it is possible that someone didn't get the pin back and yours and it slipped out.

As I do not have any newer mags I do not know if S&W changed the design in the last few years.

Thanks for all the help Aussie. Very useful info.

take care
