S&W Model 48-2 Serial # 6K3574

There is discordance between the serial number and the model number and dash.

The serial number dates it to 1974.

The 48-2 was made 1962 to 1967.

Something isn't right.

It seems to be somewhat common with 48-2's one of mine.

I have a dash two with a serial number dating it to 1971. Go figure.

This is something seen with certain models/engineering changes in the '60s. I have seen at least 3 model 17-1s (presumably produced 1959-'61 or so) with serial numbers clearly dating them to the 1967-'68 time frame. Another example of S & W not wasting any parts that can be assembled into a good gun.

I have a M53 no dash 3 screw shipped 11-74. It should be a M53-2 but there is no 2. Big Larry

Thank you all for your comments on my MDL 48-2 Serial 6K3574
it must be a pistol that S&W put together since the serial on the butt and the frame match it is an 8 &3/8 and on the crane it has 29688 with C19
