I have a Model 59, SN A250xxx that I bought over 30 years ago. In checking it today I noticed that it won't stay cocked for the single action firing. It seems to work ok for the double action but I can't get the hammer to stay cocked otherwise.

Can someone give me some suggestions as to why this is?

Thanks.

If you are lucky, it's only the sear spring.

If it's been apart, check for proper assembly.

I ordered my 59 when they were first announced. Had the same problem within 50 rnds. Sent it back for repair. Smith wanted all my mags. for modification before they would return my pistol. I never got any info on what they did to the 59. It worked well after the repair.

I know this is very old information, but a call to S&W might be worth your time. Might be a defect common to some sn range?

I would recommend that you call them. They seem to answer a telephone sooner than emails. :D

+2 on calling S&W CS i get much faster service form them that way rather than through email.

I now have my S & W Model 59 repaired. I took it to a local gunsmith and the sear spring had to be replaced. Works great now. Thanks to everyone that gave me some information and help.
