S&W Model 5906 9mm Pistol

I have 4 of them in my collection. They are iconic and function great. They make A few DAO models like the 5946, and the 5943. They make a frame de-cocker version as well, the 5926. If you are looking for A 3rd gen EDC option they make the 3913, 3914, 3953, 908, cs9, etc.. That have lower capacity but, A lot lighter and smaller making them more of A carry option.

My 5906 was my first S&W purchase and it's my favorite Smith. I had no problem carrying it since I was retired and only carried it for a few hours at a time. With a good holster I had no problems with the weight. I switched to a M&P9 a few years afterwards but will still carry my 5906 from time to time. It shoots well and is way more accurate than I am. IMHO, it's one of the best S&W made.

I bought one new in '92 as the understudy/off duty for my duty gun. Took it to many schools. Only thing I've done after thousands of rounds is change the recoil spring-and buy extra mags. Overbuilt and rugged.

An IWB holster worked fine for carry. I shot it in USPSA too.

Owned a rarely fired 5906 when joined S&W forum several years ago . Had smooth action, trigger and very comfortable to shoot . Was difficult to breakdown and reassemble till got used to it . It was heavy never carried it but did keep it behind car seat few times till got a M&P

AL DPS issued 5906s in 1986 to replace the SW M-19 .357s. Troopers were allowed to continue to carry the 19s if they did not wish to transition to the 9mm. I carried my 5906 for 10 years before retiring.

I have a 5906 Tactical. It is a very smooth shooter, but I couldn't imagine using one as my CCW. Too bulky, and far too heavy. It must weigh 40 oz loaded.

I routinely carry a 6946, which has an aluminum receiver and 12 round magazine. The 5906 has a stainless steel receiver and a longer grip to accommodate a 15 round magazine. The longer grip would make it harder to conceal and the extra weight of the stainless receiver would make it rather heavy.

The 5906 is a great shooting gun. Its weight is an advantage, not a disadvantage, because it makes the 9mm recoil seem like a puppy. For those complaining about the weight in carrying it, just use a proper belt and holster and stop complaining.

My 5906 makes me look like an expert marksman.

It's a great range gun, but as others have said it's a bit heavy for day to day carry. A 6906/46 makes a reasonable alternative if you need that much ammunition capacity.

I usually carry a pre rail 3913TSW.

As pointed out several times, the 5906 is stainless frame 15rd which makes it heavy and bulky for CCW.
Other options would be 5903 TDA / 5904 TDA blue / 5943 DAO (these are aluminum frame but otherwise same geometry as 5906 - they would be same weight as 915 - as I recall about 4 to maybe 6 oz lighter than 5906) but still big and bulky.
Better CCW options would be 6906 TDA / 6946 DAO - shorter frame and grip, 12 rd double stack mag, aluminum frame - smaller, lighter, and easier to conceal.
3913 TDA / 3914 TDA blue / 3953 DAO same length as 6906 , aluminum frame but single stack 8 rd mag so thinner frame.
CS9 TDA / CS9D DAO (rare) - still smaller, aluminum frame, single stack 7 rd mag.

I think the 6906 or 3913 would be better options for CCW. I have both plus a 3906 and 5906. The 3913 is really hard to beat and I also have a Shield.

I've owned several and the last one I bought used but unfired with the box and I wish I still owned it. I will never forget when I bought it at a gun show in Desmoines. I remember I was just getting ready to leave the show when I spied it. The young guy who had the table told me that he bought it new and had never shot it and decided to sell it. He had $420 on it and I tried to talk him down to at least $400 and he said nope, that's what he paid for it and he would not sell it for less. I looked at him and could tell he was serious.

Yes, they are heavy and I wouldn't want to carry one but it's an excellent personal protection house gun or range gun.

I'm a longtime fan and have had production and Performance Center 5906s. Basically what others have indicated, rugged, heavy, reliable, etc. I have carried the lighter 3913 and CQB on duty, but not the 5906s. Still have 4" and 5" PC versions; going to hang on to these..

I used to have several, but down to one nowadays. One of my favorite shooting guns.
