I was at a gun show today and seen a smith model 60 marked CHP with a badge in the C. I dont know if this was a backup or what? did CHP ever have this at any point? First one I have seen. Anyone know anything about them? Thanks.

In the mid 90's it was one of the few back-up guns authorized by them. I also believe that it was allowed in a double action only configuration. How do I know........ I once bought a Model 60-7 from a Rookie CHP LEO and when the gun arrived it was DAO!! When I called him to say that it was not advertised as DAO he did not even know that there was a model that offered both DA and SA. He was very apologetic, and paid for he return freight and gave me back all my money. Told me he was simply not a "gun-guy" and this is what the Academy told him he could use as a BUG.

Nice to know. This one was a model 60 in .38 spec. and it had its hammer and was double/single. The letters and font on it had that late 70's early 80's look to it if that means anything. If i see that guy again i might make him an offer. Thanks for the info. I need a CHP marked gun. the model 68 6'' is hard to come by it seems.

i see the 68s pretty regularly in the CA show circuit. now a ruger # 1 .357 CHP is a tough gun to find..
