I can purchase a Model 60 TALO .38 Special 3" (178064) for $630. Should I wait for a Model 60 Pro (178013)?

I have to 357 model 60 pro as my carry gun and love it. guess it depends on if you want to be able to shoot 357's

I would suspect finding the 178013 would be difficult and likely cost $700 or more. The 178013 being a 357 mag tends to attract way more buyer interest. If you never intend to use 357 in the Model 60 you see yourself with, then you may well have found your revolver. Folks here knowing the 60 or Smith J-frames way better then me will likely share opinions soon. Your intentions for the revolver (such as carry in general or woods carry such as holstering it while you hunt with a rifle or shotgun) should play most into your decision.

Personally for those purposes I would rather own a k or L frame with a four inch barrel in 357. Much more fun at the range and a lot easier to handle with full power loads. There may be a range close by that you can rent different models and see what you like best. If I were to own one revolver it would not be a J frame. Theo

Welcome to the forum !

I have a 60 Pro, 60-15 3", and a 60-14 2" all .357. I have fired magnums out of then, but rarely.

They're a lot more fun at the range firing .38's. For home defense touching off a .357 in the hall at 2 AM would be an experience. I keep .38 +P in it.

Guess I'm saying, you'd be well served with the TALO, and it's available.

I think it would be cool to have one in .38.

If you use the search function and search for TALO Model 60 you'll find a lot of good info and pic's :)

Sounds like a nice gun and good defensive ammo would work well for home defense.

Being a reloader I keep my HD .357 loaded with low end .357 rounds because, being musicians, I'd like to keep our hearing mostly intact if I had to let off one in the house.

With target ammo your 60 might be a lot of fun at the range and loaded with hotter stuff when at home.

I'd like to have a 60 myself.

Exactly. I love J frames, but they are really designed for regular carry. If you don't intend to carry, then you can find K frame 38s to serve your purpose for way less than $400 all day long. If you prefer, 357 models are readily available for just a little more.

If you only intend to shoot 38 S&W Special, get the TALO. If you only intend to shoot 357, get the Pro. I don't use any guns as either/or, so YMMV.

No need for magnums at the range or for home defense. .38 Special wadcutters for practice and some good +P ammo for home defense. The 3" Model 60 has excellent balance and with the longer barrel and better sights will shoot more like a K-frame than a J-frame.

I have several 4" K-frame 6- shooters but the bedside gun is the 3", 5-shot 60-4. It just feels good in the hand when investigating a bump in the night.

I also think the .38 Special Talo version will become very collectable once it's no longer available.

attn OP

Rather than comment on choices of caliber and frame size, my comment will be generic. Handguns, especially S&W, are in HIGH demand. If you pass up one model to "wait for" another model, you may find yourself waiting a long time. Also, the model you passed up will be gone.

I speak from experience...
