putting this on the lounge cause i thought it would generate more responses than on the pistol section.
got my eye on some of the performance center guns , mainly the smaller 1911 with the scandium frame & two tone finish.
any body own one ?

the quality is advertised to be hand fitting of the internals and the price is around $1500-$1600. not too bad if the quality is there. all with a factory tuned trigger of 3.5 lbs.

i like the idea of the light weight specialized frame material and the looks of the gun has really caught my eye.

give me your imput... may want to treat myself to one in a few weeks !

I do not own one. I've been thinking of one myself.

Questions I come back to;
* Am I already in the 1911 platform? Am I already 'stocking' .45ACP? (my case is 'no')
*Is this one I would start with? Or should I start with a less expensive one (maybe a Ruger or an API (ATI?))
* Can I shoot one before I buy it? (my answer so far is 'not a chance').

those are some thoughts ...

to ponder ..... but not me .

the gun is strictly a "want " not a badly needed item.

it would be my high end gun since i dont ever forsee myself forking over twice that much for custom shop creation !

that being said , i would still like some info from owners of this model i am considering .
that seems to nearly always be beneficial ...one way or the other .

I have the full size PC1911. It will outshoot my E series and the trigger pull is light! I would buy this gun again in a heartbeat.

If you already own a 1911 then ignore my comment. I'm talking about 1911s in general, not this s&w in particular

I buy sell and trade a lot. One trade brought me a Sig Sauer XO full size 1911 with crimson trace grips. The gun used to sell at $1200 but this finish/style was discontinued. Long story short, it's a good quality 1911.

I absolutely love it. When I shoot, all my holes are touching at 25 yards. Not the case with my ruger or glock 9mm pistols. Sure my other guns work fine but there's no contest when it comes to picking my best or favorite gun.

So, assuming s&w can make a 1911 that matches or exceeds Sig Sauer, go buy that gun. If you're anything like me, you'll keep it forever

I recently purchased a Performance Center 1911 (170343) which seems to be on par with my Ed Brown Executive Target in slide to frame fit, barrel to slide fit and over all quality at half the price of the Ed Brown. The barrel bushing and extractor are of differing designs and the bead blasted finish is a little nicer on the Brown, but I am very pleased with the Smith. Trigger pull on the Smith is 3lb. 12oz with no creep and is a bit better than the Brown as it has some creep. With better shooting weather coming I am looking forward to putting more rounds through the Smith without being "in the snow"...

Question should be...Can I hold and shoot with effective results a small 1911 style pistol.....I have found that the small 1911's need a strong grip no weak wristing ...period ...to be reliable and effective. I would try one before I purchased one.....I'm getting or am older and I shot 1911 in NRA competition for years, however some of the scaled down model I have a hard time with the scaled down models on quick shot exercises . Yet I have no problem with Commander size pistols of the same quality. In my opinion and experience you can have a weak wrist problem with the 1911 styled pistols with a very reduced grip...Try one ,that's a lot of money to experiment with..

I don't have the S&W, but I do have 2 compact (Officers Model size) 3 1/2" barrel RIA's. One in 45 and one in 9mm. Since these are SD type items, I practice at 10 yards. They both shoot within the opening of a coffee cup at 10 yards off hand. I would think the S&W would be much better for the difference ($1000) in price, but they would have to all be in the same hole.

I have the down sized Smith model 1911SC. It has the scandium frame, commander length, and Officer size grip. It is real pretty!
It does not come out of the Performance Center.
Shoots great, looks great, and gets compliments from everyone I show it to!

info appreciated..

seems like , considering the comments here , that the quality is good to go on the on the pc scandium s&w i have in my sights.

would possibly considering carrying it , but if i do not i have other guns up to that task.

my main concern was getting a very good quality gun for my $ spent.

if i purchase one , i most likely would enjoy it a lot and spend some time getting to know the gun . so to speak.
eventually dressing it out with a nice holster & belt combo !
still like the scandium frame it has ..... no of my other shooter friends a gun with this type of alloy ! meat !

My "1911" is a S&W 4506, but I have a friend who collects all and only 1911's and he tells me that the S&Ws are on par with 1911's twice as expensive.

where 1911's go. it's the 57 chevy of handguns. As long as the frame is mil spec you can pretty much do anything you want to it and craft it into a dream gun, assuming you have the mechanical inclination and honest craftsmanship to do the work.
at which point, you might wish to look at low end specimens with hot rodding in mind.
There are volumes of things one could do to an RIA or Springfield that would make one cringe if done to a PC Smith.
The 400 Corbon conversion is an interesting one.

I was planning to buy an S&W 108284, then decided to spring for an E-series but found none available with an adjustable rear sight. Now my thoughts are centered on a Performance Center 170343. Anyone have experience with that model?

Ed

I have the PC commander. Great pistol. Fit, trigger, bushing and accuracy is awesome. I did swap out the ghastly orange grips.
