When did they switch from plastic cases to cardboard boxes?

Dunno. When I bought my Shield in 2014, it came in a cardboard box. I think it depends on the model.

It depends on the model. Shields and EZ models came in cardboard boxes. M&P models came in plastic cases.

If I had to make a guess, it was because one was less expensive than the other at the time. Such things go back and forth all the time. At least they're not blister pack wrapped...yet.

Now that I think of it, I've got a replica of an M&P that shoots BB/CO2 that came in a blister pack. Maybe it's started.
