Can someone help me on this. I found a old Smith & Wesson in my parents house. It has no model number that I can find only a serial number. The only markings is on the barrel. It looks like what I recall hearing someone say, a Bull barrel. It is larger than a normal barrel. The barrel has SAGE .38 on it. Can anyone tell what I have here? Thanks

Thanks. I'm new here so I'll have to figure out how to do that. Also, after cleaning, I found stamped on top of the frame, I had to use a magnifing glass, US Property G H D.

The "US Property GHD" marking indicates this was a WWII military revolver when it was produced. Many of these were modified in different ways and photos would be the only way to really get more detailed information. Most of these revolvers had serial numbers beginning with a V but some early versions had only numbers. The original caliber was either 38 S&W (made for the British) with a 5 inch barrel or 38 Special (made for the US) with a 4 inch barrel.

Hope this helps.

I hope these come thru. You are right SCHA there is a V in front of the s/n and the barrel is 4". The small medallion in the grips that is normally the SW logo is an American Eagle with arrows. Is the SAGE on the barrel the company that modified the gun for the government?View attachment 43850[/ATTACH]

The photos show that the original barrel has been replaced, a rear target sight has been added to the frame and the grips are not original. Such changes were made by someone after this gun was released from military service. I am not familiar with the SAGE marking but others on this forum may have more information.

Basically, someone took a military surplus revolver and converted it into a target revolver with the new bull barrel and target sights.

Hope this helps.
