S&W SD40 My initial thoughts

Well, I bought an SD40 the other day. At first I was disappointed in the trigger. But, after dry firing it about 30-40 times the trigger smoothed right out. The trigger has become amazing! It really does feel just like a DA revolver trigger pull and tips the scales at around 7 pounds. This is not a tuned M&P trigger. It has a long pull and a long reset just like a DA revolver. I actually think that this may be the perfect combat trigger. It isn't the perfect competition trigger but it's not designed to be. As far as the mechanism goes, it is a new design. It shares nothing in common with the M&P, the Glock or the SIGMA. My take on the design is that it is simple and robust. I think it will prove to be a very reliable design simply because of it's simplicity.

Some of the other outstanding features are the sights, grip and magazines. The sights are pure S&W M&P sights. This means that aftermarket sights for the M&P will fit the SD Series. There are some great sight options available. It comes from the factory with a front night sight. That will be staying and I think I will be adding a 10-8 Rear sight to the gun. The grip angle is from the SIGMA but with a new texture pattern. It's wonderful the way it is. Now on to the magazines. They are basically SIGMA mags with new floor plates and a new follower in the .40 model. You can get preban hicaps for the SIGMA and use them as is or put on SD floor plates on the 9mm or floor plates and followers in the .40.

Size wise, the SD is light and thin. It is thinner than the M&P and SIGMA. Overall it is a badass little gun at a great price. I can't wait to shoot it!

That's all I needed to hear. It is time for me to go look at an SD. Though I enjoy the Sigmas, I think "thinner" is better.

Don't get confused when we are talking thinner it may be 1/16 of an inch at best. I have 2 SD's a 9mm and a 40 and an old sigma 40V limited. I can not tell the difference in thickness by holding it. Still agree with everything else he said. I find myself carrying the SD40 over my M&P 40c at times. I really do like everything about the gun except for the way the rear serrations and sight pinch when carrying. I'm looking at different holster options for that though and see myself getting a cross breed super tuck sometime in my near future.

Check the frame carefully if you're planning on buying an SD pistol. Many have misaligned frames that S&W considers "within specs". Must be a lot of them because they are pretending that it's not a problem. But in my mind, having the slide a couple of degrees off from the frame is a problem, certainly not the way S&W intended for it to fit. But thy want stand behind it so be careful.

As long as it hits on target and where I aim I say it's good to go. Instead of opening an account on here just to bash S&W why don't you go out and shoot it and then report if it's an issue, or better yet let someone else who is skilled and qualified shoot it and give a report.

I'm with Backon4 on this. If the pistol works fine and it's just cosmetic then get over it. Many Glocks exhibit the same issue and it's not a problem.

My 3 month old 9VE trigger pull is still at 10.5# after 250 rounds and considerable dry firing. It's a little smoother now but always was pretty good. Having used DA revolvers for many years I prefer that general setup, particularly in a defense piece. As long as the pull is smooth without stacking or excessive backlash a somewhat heavy pull is a good thing IMHO. I had great difficulty shooting a G17 with stock trigger decently, and didn't do much better with a SIG 220 in DA/SA and DAO. Others do great, but I didn't.

After working with the Sigma for a while I wondered about an M&P 45c, but the pulls on M&Ps are noticeably lighter and I don't think I would shoot them as well as the Sigma. I'd rather not fork over $600 for an M&P and then find out I'd regressed.

Maybe if there was a 10 pound trigger option for the M&P I'd be okay.

There is a 10 pound trigger option for the M&P pistol. Just ask your dealer to order a Massachusetts Compliant M&P. Mass guns have a 10 pound trigger that feels amazingly similar to the SW9VE and SW40VE pistols.

So I got to looking at my SD9 and it's off a little, like 2mm max. Shoots straight so I'm only going to assume that within spec allows for some variance.

I love my sd40. The gun feels great in the hand and shoots better than i could. Granted I've only shot 200 rounds through it, I didn't a a ftf, fte,stovepipe or anything. The gun performed awesome. My only dislike is it's not made in .45, and the mag rattle.

Presspics--that is interesting. I will keep that in mind as I just keep liking that Sigma trigger more and more.

I presume that any (?) M&P could be retrofitted to that setup...thanks for the heads-up on that.
