new to me model 10-5
just got from an older fellow a S&W model 10-5 sure would love to know the vintage,anyone that could help, thank you.. is D561421 is a beautiful weapon, look forward to taking it to the range this weekend..thanks,Dale

As you can see from the (unanswered) post from 4 1/2 years ago, it is always best to start a new thread with new questions, as the old threads get overlooked. 
Just a quick note/tip for anyone who doesn't know:
You can send S&W an email with your serial number and any questions and they will get back to you with the date of manufacture and any other info you may be seeking. I do this all the time and they tend to respond within a day or two.

That would have saved me $75 for the factory letter I just got back.
Just to clarify, though... I personally only use this convenient service for "newer" stuff like 2nd and 3rd gen semi-auto pistols from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s. Perhaps it is not a free and quick service for older Smith & Wesson firearms.

Not to disparage anyone at S&W, but whenever someone new posts here with the year of manufacture on older guns, the information they got from the factory frequently turns out to be wrong, sometimes spectacularly.
As was mentioned, they're likely best for the newer stuff from the last few decades; on anything older, and for the shipping specifics and configuration, there is no substitute for a history letter.

Amen...I just wish there was a pocket version I could carry with me to gunshows...that 4th edition is too damn big to drag around!
Hey wait...the author(s) are on this board right? It sure would be nice to have a pocket sized soft cover that contains the model numbers, production numbers and variation info, Appendix A (Serial Number ranges), and values...you'd get more money from me to have that one too!

SCSW is nice, but it's vague on date ranges of some models, like the late '50s and early '60s J frames. There is an electronic version you can download...and SCSW3 is free. Have to pay for SCSW4 though.

You can also buy the Kindle edition too, which you can read on a Kindle reader, tablet or a smartphone with the Kindle app. That's more portable.

You can go to Amazon.com and type in standard catalog of Smith and Wesson in the search box and click the first link, then choose the Kindle Edition. I don't know about other electronic editions and make sure you click on the link to the 4th edition as they still offer the 3rd edition too.
