Looking for some ideas on a belt holster (not to be worn on a cartridge belt) for a 4 3/4" single action army. I'm leaning towards El Paso's Tom Threepersons but open to other suggestions, thanks.

Here is a style a bit before the Threepersons,

One can't rely on the maker's rep to choose a holster model, because not all models in a range are done well. Example: EPS does a hash-up of the Brill pattern while Barranti makes the only authentic one.

What is a 'good' Threepersons? Its muzzle is closed, it is strapless, and its welt stack holds the revolver in tightly. Leave out any one of those features and it's a poor copy instead. Here's an X-ray of Tom's own, showing how an SA's frame was gripped by a pair of very thick welts inside the main seam. A little too well in Tom's case, he trimmed away a chunk of the welts at a critical spot, I expect for a quicker draw (for which he also pared away the uppermost leading edge of the holster mouth). You should see what he did to his Colt! Look closely.

And of course, Tom's own holster doesn't really fit Charlie Askins' description of such. Instead Tom's holster rode/rides quite low by comparison with a Brill or a Myres.

An "exact" copy might or might not be right for you.

Depending on the purpose, importance of period correctness or authenticity is likely to be a sliding scale for me.

The one on the left is open toe. Does that make it a “poor copy”?

Good looking holsters. Might know the chap who made 'em.

The key learning from the Threepersons is 'retention without a strap', which according to Capt Sterling was called a 'retreating strap' by the Texas Rangers; by means of the welt stack alone. Pics around here somewhere of SAs being held in upside down in such (crazyphil has one such, for example).

When a Threepersons doesn't conform to the formula, or a Brill (there was a recipe), I call it a 'modified Threepersons (or Brill). The 1930 Threepersons itself was preceded by the 1905 Brill; the former is the latter with all the complexities cut away.

Sorry Red, just had to poke a little fun at ‘ya. :)

They are both great holsters and I’ve done the “upside down” thing with them. Trust them to retain my Colts when in saddle. For the OP, other than these two holsters I only have one other style that I use and trust without a retention strap. That is my Hank Sloan built by Mike Barranti.

El Paso 1849 Californian

I first got an El Paso Tom Threepersons from Midway but wanted more coverage of my SAA so I ordered this 1849 Californian model and matching ranger belt and six round cartridge slide. I like it.
