4 year old boy from my home state got swept out to sea from his mother’s side, walking the beach in Carolina’s Outer banks. Kitty hawk. I know tragic things happen everywhere, every minute of everyday, being a first time father of a 3 year old this just hit home a little harder for me. Prayers to that Mother/family. I can’t imagine.

I'm sitting next to a five year old watching him play. The thought of losing him, or any of mine, is horrifying as it would be to all here.

Like you, I can't imagine the anguish the family is suffering.

We will add them to the daily list. God be with them.

Undertow is no joke!

Not generally known, California beaches and as far north as Alaska are NOT to be waded in. Santa Barbra and south are OK, but few know not to go into the water without a buoyant wet suit.

I personally lost one friend in high school at Thornton Beach in Daly City and almost lost another, but I foolishly dove in to grab him and my other friends formed up a chain and brought us both back.

Prayers to the family.

This has been in the news here in North Carolina, of course, and it is a painfully tragic story. I assume the family was vacationing from New Hampshire when this happened, and it crossed my mind that perhaps the family was not familiar with seaside currents and how strong they can be, especially along the Outer Banks. My heart goes out to this family in their unimaginable loss.

In a second incident later in the week, further south at Emerald Isle, North Carolina, an off-duty Oswego, New York firefighter rescued three girls from a rip current. It was a wonderful story of a true hero who, coincidentally, had completed a swift-water rescue course recently back home. Here's a link to a story about this fine New York first responder:

Yep. The Ocean is like a wild animal. Don’t ever know what it’s gonna do, where it when it’s gonna do it, in other words - ‘how it’s going to behave.’ Or not.

Still, my heart pains for the horror of the incident.

Lose a dog easy wrong place, wrong shore, wrong river, wrong time. But my god, a child. Heartbreaking.

Between sharks and currents, I stay in the pool. I'm a lil weenie.

Praying for the family. Sad!

Unspeakable Tragedy

I've got four grandsons, the oldest being 3 years of age. I just can't imagine...

years ago when I was stationed in Hawaii, I was knocked head over heels by a wave. Fairly big, but totally unexpected. The force of water is amazing, and most people do not know or understand.

Easy to think, I can swim through that or its only waist deep. Water is like, what, 7.8 pounds per gallon? ( I have been carrying buckets for the horses and looked it up) Heavy stuff alone, let alone its force.

yikes....

Many years ago when I was young and strong, I nearly lost my life the first time I ever got in an ocean. Being from Kansas I had no idea how powerful the ocean can be and still don't know exactly how I escaped with my life.
That experience taught me a lesson that I have never forgotten. I have the utmost respect for the power of the ocean to this day.
When my kids experienced their first ocean I was very observant and watchful of them. Almost fearful.
My thoughts and prayers are with this family that lost their child.

My parents made sure we learned how to swim and I became a very strong swimmer, and a life guard as a teen for one summer. We have also vacationed as a family at the beach for years but are very watchful of our kids, now grandkids, while there. No one, unless they really know the ocean, is prepared for how strong & dangerous that water can be.

My wife an I just got back from Los Cabos Mexico a couple if months ago. The trip was incredibly cheap and the area looked very new, nice, and upscale so I kept wondering "whats the catch?" Then I read the fine print saying that you are not allowed to go in the ocean. We were pretty bummed about it then we got there and the place was breathtakingly beautiful and had an incredible beach. We walked down to the water and thought that there was no reason we cannot wade in a little ways. Well, I realized the beach drops off very quickly and that undertow was so stout it could suck my 200 pounds out to sea in an instant! I'm a strong swimmer but I quickly came back in and my wife waded out and said "whats the problem?" I grabbed her arm and pulled her back on the beach, I was not going to take any chances with THAT current. I then started wondering how many people had died there since the resort is all inclusive with free drinks.

Gut wrenching tragedy, my heart breaks.

Could see what would happen, was moving when a wave dragged out a three year old wearing a one piece with built in tube. I snatched him before the next one could drive him down but I caught it upside my head. The face of a breaking wave is fairly dense and it slapped me hard.
I put the kid down next to Mom who was right there but had no idea what happened.
