Tricky, For more info, check the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson," 3rd edit., by Supica & Nahas, and "Smith & Wesson, 1857 -1945" by Neal & Jinks. The "two" in the stamping just means there were two patents issued on that date. Check the above sources for what the patents actually covered. What's the serial number of the revolver? Ed.

thanks mike, i was trying to get this on b4 work and didn't have time to really figure it out. ed, s/n is 154xxx any idea of shipment date? am i right in thinking tis is a second model? i went back 40 pages(forum history) last night and my eyes got tired. finish really is 97% in my opinion. one problem i have is that the cylinder stop does not lower as trigger is pulled. i removed side plate and it appears that there is nothing pushing down on it as hammer rotates back. it takes very little pressure to release it w/a small screwdriver as trigger is pulled. i looked on numrich who has a parts diagram, but i could not tell what might be missing (or broken, but i think not as it operates fine as described above). anyone have any ideas or a exploded part diag.?

Tricky,I'd guess that the "split-spring" is broken. There is a projection on the bottom of the hammer which pushes down on the split-spring as the hammer is cocked. This unlocks (pulls down) the cylinder stop so the cylinder can rotate. Upon firing, the projection passes harmlessly between the two halves of the split-spring without unlocking the cylinder stop. It's sort of like the spring on the cylinder stop of the tip-ups. Mike

thanks mike, w/ a name to put to it i was able to go back to numrich, see the part to know what i was looking for on the gun, which is by the way, broken, its missing the "split" end that faces up.

Tricky, eBay has them from time to time, but with the new policy they just announced, this source may dry up. You may have to steal one from a parts gun. Good luck. Mike

You might try Jack First for parts, or David Buehn in California. Estimating mfr. date on these little devils is hard - the only way is to get a factory letter. I had estimated 1929 on mine, but the factory letter came back as being sent in 1921! Here's a pic of my little jewel of a 3" .32:
