This morning I attended the show at the Ahern Hotel Casino, Las Vegas. First show at the Ahern and for the promoter. Was pleasantly surprised that they limited non-gun related vendors. Didn’t take long for me to spot this cherry (possibly unfired) Sako L461 in 223. Since it has the AI bolt with shrouded firing pin, vixen stock and L461 action, it’s a transitional gun made around 1980. It was wearing a new Weaver CKT15 in Talley rings. I didn’t bother to negotiate. I happily gave the seller the $1100 he was asking.

I reluctantly swapped the beautiful, gloss Weaver for a Leupold MK II 3-9x40 Tactical.

Wow, that’s a beauty, congratulations! Those Sakos are great shooters…! And I don’t know, as much as I like Leupold glass, I really like that Weaver on that gun…

Me too. Not much work to change it back, but 15x is a lot of scope for a walk-around rifle.

Nice looking piece. So what else did you see at the show? I didn't know it was on, and my discretionary spending just took a serious hit thanks to the water heater quitting.

A lot of new guns, black rifles and related accessories. I looked hard hard at a custom Mauser in 264 WM. I picked up a Kydex holster and another scope. I liked it better than the Tuscany and Alexis shows. Less none gun stuff. A fair amount of milsurp. Parking and show access were convenient. Right off the elevator from the parking garage.

Seeing some milsurps might have been nice, but some of them in Vegas have been circulating the shows with the same over the top prices for years.

I had a 1950's Sako in 308 (B-I-L still has it!) That action was butter smooth. I had an old Leupold M-8 10x on it for load development. I didn't find a load it didn't like in the 150-165 grain range.

I currently have the last Varminter Sako built in 6mm PPC That year they built 24 target guns and the one3 special order Varmint gun. It has a match chamber, and shoots "Head Hunters" around 1/4-3/16" groups at 200 yards.

Fantastic guns!

My favorite SAKO is a L-461 HB chambered in 222 Remington that I got in 1974 when stationed in Germany. It took me a while to find the best load for it but now, with that load, it consistently shoots 1/2 MOA groups. Many a groundhog has met his end with this rifle.

I have one Sako that I have owned since the mid 70's. It is a Sako Mauser in 30-06 that I got from a neighbor who brought it back from Germany in 1954. He gave me half a box of shells with it. I fired a few more. Still has less than 20 rounds down the tube. It is a favorite
