Given that about every medicine, otc or prescription is a complete failure at clearing up my sinus drip I am reduced to checking out the lunatic fringe cures. These salt pipes as sold on Amazon have nearly unanimous approval.
Has anyone here ever tried one?

What the heck is a salt pipe????? I saw on TV the other day that they are marketing a Saline inhaler for kids-no drugs just saline. Maybe that would work, but I'd rather the old fashioned remedy.t of snorting warm salt water myself.-cheaper too.

I never heard of them till just now too.

How much are they? Never heard of them either. I have a huge problem since I lost my nose and a new one rebuilt. I usually get hit with a sinus attack every evening and when I get up in the morning I get a gagging attack that makes me sick and I sound like I have the death rattels.
I would like to try one of those pipes if they aren't too expensive.

Merril, they start at around 20 bucks on Amazon. I am not vouching for them. I suggest you read the reviews, which are very good.
I. Get the same gagging attacks as you. My wife has twice called 911 cause she thought I was strangling.

Dang I hate typing on an I Pad!

The one I'm familiar with......

The one I've seen looks like a long snout teapot called a Neti pot that you pour into one nostril and out the other. Do not use tap water as people have gotten the brain eating amoeba this way. No kidding. It happened twice in Louisiana. I don't know how the critters survive water treatment but it has happened. Clean properly and use boiled or distilled water.

I have incredibly productive constant sinus drip/congestion and found snuffling warm salt water in a spray to be as good as anything.

I've been taking nasacort with helps with swelling, the only spray that works for me.

Afrin is horribly addictive and can't be used past a few days.

Regular quafenisen helps when the congestion gets extra bad. Must take this with a lot of water.

Always drink tons of water to thin the mucous and make it more water like.

This is the sum total of all that I've found to do any good in my entire life (I'm 58).

RW, I think the pipes work with dry salt and the air is breathed through it. But I am far from an expert. Like others in this thread this is the first time I've heard of them.

Amoebas encyst (like an egg-a hard crystalline shell). Some species can survive.

I've used saline spray for sinus issues ("hay fever" from fireplaces in the winter, etc). Works good. The further north we moved, the worse our allergies became. Wife is going through the shot regime.

I will second the neti pot. I dive a lot, and had horrible allergies as a kid. When you are holding your breath, and 60ft down, the pressure on your sinuses can be pretty intense. And, the salt water infusion/ breathing a lot of salt mist makes your mucous dehydrated and very thick as your body tries to expel the excess salt.
A neti pot with warm water is fine. I also travel with a little blue squeeze bottle designed to clear infants' sinuses. Warm salted water in the squeezie, in the nostril, tilt back the head, and flush. VERY inexpensive and easy.

And, the 'Himalayan salt, ultra pure sea salt, salt from the center of the earth'...... mean nothing. Pass on them, and use clean table salt.
Its' made of pure.......... salt.

For a sinus infection or an abscess in your sinuses, I will flush for a day or two, and if that does not help measurably, I will make a solution of 5-10% hydrogen peroxide and 90-95% warm water and flush my sinuses with that. 2 times a day, no more is usually necessary. It kills the bacteria, and is not so aggressive as to leave your sinus passages raw.

I can't stress it enough; do not get excited to clear out all the germs and use a stronger solution. It will burn, foam up excessively, and you will shoot foaming snot water out of your face as your head rejects the peroxide.

Ask me how I know......

At this point I'm willing to try most anything. With prices starting at $20.00 I think I'll try it. If it works I'll let you know.

If it works? definitely let me know. One of my Nephews has a bad case of Asthma, and tries everything with little result. I also have Asthma but not effected as bad.

I've had several sinus operations and procedures on my maxillary and frontal sinuses. Infected sinuses will make you really sick, sick, sick.

I haven't had a sense of smell for 30 years until I visited a new ENT and was prescribed a steroid to spray into my nose every twelve hours.

After 2 weeks, I went grocery shopping and while still 2 isles away from the Laundry Detergent Section I started smelling again. The smell from the softners, detergents and soaps was overpowering, and just about made me sick!

Since using that stuff, my sense of smell is back to normal, but I can't miss a dose or my smelling becomes impaired right away.

Would you mind sending me a PM with the name of the spray. My MIL at 85 has had the same problem for about as long as you have. No smell or taste. We have to check her fridge regularly as she can't smell anything that has gone bad. Scary.
Thanks
Jim

I ordered one and it should be here on Monday. I also wondered about the Himalayan salt. The only advantage I could think of was maybe larger crystals so you don't breath a bunch of salt down into your lungs. In any case the salt is supplied with the inhaler and the reviews say it lasts several months to a year or so.
Caj, how is it that you know so much about that funny smellin' weed? :D

strangely .. a while back I had read an article about chronic sinus issues where the guy resorted to using a baby shampoo nasal rinse in a last ditch effort.
He did report amazing results. Do some web searching on the subject.
I wondered why the piece drifted my way when I read it ... perhaps this is why it did
