This little flat latch, square butt chief special showed up at my table at the Columbia SC gun show. Showing scratches, dings, and honest use, but in its original star burst box. I'm partial to those flat latch I and J frames, and at an asking price of $400 it had to come home with me.

It appears to be a great little Chiefs Special, and the price was sure right. Congrats.
The era of its serial number suggests S&W might have shipped it as early as summer of '56 or as late as summer of '57. The database doesn't show enough examples from then to make a better guess.
Is the serial number stamped on the bottom of the barrel and the back of the cylinder? It was during that era when the company stopped that practice.
