Ibuprofen and muscle relaxants or booze (not both!) can help initially then a chiropractor or physical therapy from there.Walking can help keep things loose and after it eases, exercise that strengthens your core muscles can help keep it at bay.One thing I've learned the hard way,is the second it starts to twinge, stop doing whatever you're doing.

Get your partner to take a rolling pin and roll along the affected side. Butt and thigh included. If no partner ,put the roller on the floor and roll the effected area. Anything round will work as long as you can roll some life into the low back, butt, and thigh. Get it as loose as you can then try to pull your knee to your chest while on your back a little pain is ok don't go to hard. Hurts a bit at the start. I agree chiropractic if no relief.

I just recently went through a pretty bad bout of sciatica.
'Bout the only way I got any kind of relief was to lay on the floor, flat on my back.

My wife built a nest for me on the floor:

I'd apply a heating pad directly to the area with the most pain. Then on my lower back and butt.
I fortunately have a wonderful wife who helped me through it all.

Get to a doctor. He'll give you some mild stuff while you wait for the specialist to give you the good stuff.

Sciatica sucks. Really sucks.

Good luck.

^that! I had a bout of it this past Fall. Ibuprofen mostly got me through the work day, and when I started seeing a chiropractor she fixed it in a few sessions over 2-3 months.

slow stretching before getting out of bed and before going to bed ..
sit on a pillow .. but not one of those donuts they're for something else ..
sit up straight stop slouching over .. some easy chairs can make it worse .. walk upright and try not to favor the bad leg .. it will make it worse .. don't lean forward when your at the computer or eating .. again sit up straight !!

A hydroculator pad will help if you buy one .. its a quilted fabric filled with a hard clay substance that holds heat for a long time .. you heat it in water bath and then apply to area that hurts .. when not in use you store it your freezer .. freezing it while its still wet .. found in a medical supply store .. cost about 25 bucks and worth every penny !!! much better then a heating pad because its a moist heat .. and will go deep in the muscles ..

Try some simple yoga poses. I suffered with sciatica for 2 or 3 months then I found some yoga poses on the web. Within a couple of weeks I found some relief, after about 2 months of stretching and getting my sciatic nerve back in line I was good as new. Start slow, try some different poses and what feels best for you.

I use "Zostrix" or any of its cousins-It is a capsaicin topical remedy made with cayenne pepper, so use gloves, and don't get it where you don't want it!

Try it on a small spot before spreading over a large area .. I was allergic to a product like that and it burnt me .. I was suppose to put it on 3 times a day and didn't make it past 2 times .. my skin was a very bright red .. my pain Dr gave me a sample .. made a sore that was raw that took 3 weeks to heal and right at an area my clothing rubbed which is why it took so long to heal .. it works great for a lot of people but not all of us .. do be careful if you use it ..

I've been fight sciatica pain since 2001 when I dislocated my tailbone .. I've tried about everything ..

The cure depends on the cause. Locked up muscles (spasms) will pull vertebra out of alignment and put pressure on nerves radiating from the spine. A temporary thing easily treated by rest, pain meds and muscle relaxants. There may be an underlying problem which caused your painful symptoms. GOOD chiros (hard to find) are great, and honest. They will be up-front if they don't think that they can help you and will recommend an MD who can help.

I try to function in that pain range almost every day. It gets worse when weather rolls in because of expanding soft tissue due to low atmospheric pressure. My problem is spinal stenosis and a few herniated discs due to a motorcycle crash in 1976. (A '68 Buick Deuce-and-a-Quarter will ALWAYS win in a duel with a Yamaha!)

WARNING TO ALL: If you've ever had any kind of injury in the past, they will haunt you in the future. I'm pretty sure I need a full-body transplant...

Good luck and heal quickly.

Sciatica is mostly caused...

Sciatica is mostly caused by a pinch in the lower spine, so while your are rolling and exercising, pay attention to that. You can find some exercises for sciatica on the web.

Check the internet for a chiropractor that has been trained and practices Gonstead chiropractic treatment.

I suffered from knee pain so bad I couldn't even think about moving my knee without it hurting. I heard so many say I would have to have knee replacement or at least surgery. I had to do something and I didn't want no knife cutting on me. I found information on Gonstead type of chiropractic treatment. I checked the internet and found two not far from me. I called the closest one and made an appointment. I was so glad I got an appointment the next day,
The first thing he did was take an xray of my back. He said he had to see if he could be of any help before he would even touch me. Next he went over the xrays with me and told me my knee problem was caused by my back being out of alignment and some was from my neck out of joint.
I stood on the platform at end of the table and he then tilted me and the table flat. He then popped my back and it sounded like a semi auto being quick fired. Holy cripe it felt like I had a crunching blow to my back but it didn't hurt at all. He then pulled back on my leg to straighten the knee back into place. He then tilted me back up and then had me sit on a chair. Next he popped my neck with my head turned in two directions. Again I had a rapid fire popping/cracking sound. That didn't hurt but it wasn't a good feeling either. I could definitely tell my knee had a lot less pain and could actually bend it.
I believe I went back for three treatments and each time my knee felt better. I haven't used crutches or a cane since then.
One time I was pulling dead limbs down off a tree using a rope around the limb. The sudden breaking of the limb cause me to jerk back. Oh geeze my back was hurting and bending over to tie my shoes was painful.
I made another appt. with him and when I got there I told him what happened and I thought I threw my back out. He felt my back with his fingers and said yep you definitely threw your back out of whack. He laid me on the table and popped my back with a couple quick pushes. No more pain.
Look up Gonstead chiropractic treatment and you might talk to a nearby office to get his/her consultation. I tell you it sure relieved my pain. I never thought much about chiropractors. I had been to one just prior to this one but that one didn't practice Gonstead methods and he didn't help me either.
The first visit was around $240 because that included the xray. Following visits were $45 each. Buddy that was a small amount to pay for relief of over 6 months of horrible pain. It has been a year now and I am still not having any knee pain or limited use.

Must be contagious!

Sciatica has gotten to me, too. Had first bout circa 20 years ago. So bad I was laying on my back in a gravel parking lot. Yes, it felt better there than standing up. Found a chiropractor and he fixed most of it in one (1!) visit. Slight issues since then but none requiring treatment until two weeks ago.

First hit me on Friday. Literally could not do anything...including sleep. Could not see a chiropractor until Wednesday due to Mom care duties. Doc fixed about half of it first visit. Subsequent visits have fixed it almost completely. See doc again tomorrow and hope that's it...at least for another 20 years! :D

I have a very high threshold of pain tolerance and don't like to take any meds but, believe me, sciatica will catch your attention.

Hope all of you are doing better.

Be safe!
