I made a mistake in the past by having a pristine early Model 57 drilled and tapped so I could hunt, however I won't be selling it.

I also have a 625 45 Colt I would like to hunt with but I need some optical help due to old age eyes.I would like to hear from some handgun hunters how they handled their mounting problems. Is the B Square type the answer?

I have a B Square on a 629.
I kinda regret it.
when it gives up under heavy recoil, it has a nasty consequence of taking the rear sight slot in the frame with it.
I cannot effectively revert to iron sites on this gun for that reason.

The S&W revolvers I've mounted scopes on have all been either factory drilled and tapped, or came to me drilled. For those I used the inexpensive mount made by Weaver. A better made, stronger mount is available from Jack Weigand Smith Wesson scope mounts KLN frame Weaver WEIG-A-TINNY® I've used Weigand mounts on a couple Rugers and they are very well made.
Avoid any mount that clamps onto the frame and uses the rear sight screw hole.

That is exactly why I didn't use the B Square I had bought before I drilled and tapped.I surmised it would scratch and beat up the frame.

I put a Weaver mount on a Model 28. I put tape under the claws. When I removed the scope several years later, Not one blemish.

I have a couple sets for S&W frames...I'll have to dig them out..PM me around Saturday PM and I'll try to get you info...

I would recommend the "no-drill" mounts (for older non-drilled frames), ONLY for a 22 RF. Any amount of recoil will eventually damage your gun or cost you more money. I did buy a K 38 target that had one on it, and I had to have the "sheared off" front screw drilled out and then re-tapped before I could put iron sights back on it. (Never again). I do have a red dot mounted on one, but it is new enough to have been drilled & tapped at the factory (3 holes), which will hold a rail very securely.

Armenius:

I have a Model 625 revolver that I decided to try a red dot sight on. Everyone told me that the piece should be drilled and tapped from the factory, but I guess someone forgot to tell the factory as mine has not been drilled or tapped.

I found a no-drill scope mount you might be interested in:

Revolvers

Caution: for me, at least, the mount did not work as advertised. There is no way you can use the iron sights with the rail mounted. Additionally, I was able to successfully mount a red dot sight, but the combined weight of the revolver, the mount, and red dot made the entire package just too bulky, so I never tried to fire it.

If you're interested, please email me and we can discuss this further.

Good luck,

Dave

I've been using this red dot J Point for the past several years while deer hunting, with good results.
