I picked up a 1/2 full 12 pound keg of 700-X in a lot of reloading supplies the other day. I got it for a bargain price, not realizing how versatile this powder is.

Looking at the Hodgdon reloading center there are numerous loads for 380 acp, 9mm, 38 special and +P, 357 magnum, 44 special, 44 magnum, 45 acp, and even 45 Colt - every cartridge I reload! Plus a lot of others I don't. Looks like it can be loaded over a pretty wide range of velocities too.

This stuff looks great! Right up there with Unique for versatility. Though from what I've read it meters about as bad as Unique too :D Is that why it doesn't seem to be one of those powders that so many people rave about and swear by as their "go-to" powder?

I use Hodgdon 700-x I have used it in all the rounds you listed. I think it is pretty decent powder. I find it meters well in my Lee powder measure. I bought a bunch when there was talk of restricting reloading items.

I used bullseye. People told me it was dirty, use red dot. I used red dot, people said it was dirty, use 700-x. I used 700-x, people said its dirty, use WST. Now I use WST. it's dirty. I guess they're all dirty. I have some fresh 700-x if any locals need any.

Any particular reason you're wanting to give it away? Something wrong with it? Dirtier than the rest? Metering issues?

Just a darn minute. Where did I say free? [emoji15] I bought it when pistol powder was scarce. Dirtier than the rest? I doubt it. Metering issues? Dunno.. Haven't used any for years. This is sealed. Just don't need it now that Hilary lost. I believe I have a few other pounders as well. [emoji106]

700X is my go to shotgun powder for everything but .410.
I've gone through a fair amount of it and still have a couple kegs in reserve.

I consider 700-X to be very similar to Bullseye. Back in the days when I was doing a lot of trap and skeet shooting I used a ton of it. It also works well in about any handgun cartridge you happen to use, as does Bullseye. Around a year ago, I found about 2 pounds of it I still had from the old days, and used most of it for .38 Super. Several gun shows back, I got a nearly full 14 ounce container of IMR 700-X for $10. Like Bullseye, it doesn't take much and you can get a lot of shooting out of a pound.

I really don't get this "dirty" thing at all. Every powder I use seems about the same to me, and as I always clean my guns after shooting anyway, maybe I don't notice that some powders are dirtier than others. I guess some people just need something to gripe about.

My long time go to load for 44 mag is 7gr 700X and a 240gr cast SWC. About 985fps in a 6-6.5" 29.

Been loading 4.5 in 45acp with a 200gr swc. It is slightly below minimum but still zippy. I load the same load in 357 with a 158 swc.

I load 10gr in 454 Casull with a 255 swc.

I THINK my skeet load was 17.5gr in AA hulls, 1oz shot in a pink (?) AA wad.

Like Bullseye it excels in target loads . Now it doesn't meter as well but it does give good accuracy , especially in 38 wadcutter & 45acp SWC loads .

I use it for low pressure, 3/4 oz loads in my vintage SxS's. It does leave a lot of unburned flakes in the barrels especially in colder temps but it cleans up easy enough. Haven't tried it in handgun loads yet. I have other powders I'm satisfied with for those applications.

I also used 700-X in 9mm, .38 Spl, .45 ACP, and .44 Magnum (light loads). Of course, I've also used Bullseye for the same things...

700-X worked best in 9mm. I wasn't satisfied with how well it metered in .38 Spl quantities.

I ended up with 15-20 containers, because 1) it was available and 2) it was $15/container. Haven't used any yet, but I have no plans of letting it go either. I have enough powder to get me through retirement, whenever I get there lol.

I too started using it when I stumbled on a full 12#can and now I use it in all my target loads in .38Spl and .45 Acp.
2.6gr of it under a 152gr WC will keep them right up there in the pay zone...if I do my job correctly!

Wish I had one of those 5 pound square cans or a few one pound containers to re-pack it in.

The 12 pound keg is too big to fit into my powder storage cabinet.

I bought it when pistol powder was scarce.

Same here. I bought 3 lbs to load .38 spl and have yet to find a load the groups better than 3.5" at 25 yards from any of my guns.

I may just burn it up for IDPA practice loads.

PS: if you want clean in light loads, Clays is the way to go. I first loaded in 7/8 oz 12 gauge and after the first 50 rounds my SKB O/U looked unfired.

I'm about out of 700X. My can was sold by DuPont. It is labeled that the powder was made in Canada for DuPont. Now, the powder is sold by Hodgdon, and it is also labeled that it is made in Canada for Hodgdon. I assume the powder has been made by the same company in Canada for both companies, but what Canadian company is doing the actual manufacturing?

Also, I prefer 700x over all other powders for .44-40.

I couldn't get it to burn in 38 spl. It was fine in 357 mag. I crimped the 38 spl as hard as I could and that helped but for me it wasn't worth the aggravation. Not sure what the problem was. It was a pain for measuring also.
