I finally finished the upgrades to the SD40VE I traded for.

I used Mothers Mag polish and my dremel polishing wheel to buff the feed ramp to a mirror shine.
I put on some grips from tractiongrips.com for $8.99 delivered and really like them.
I installed the spring kit from Apex tactical and that thing is magic.
Also added night sights from XS Big Dots from E-Bay for $85.00.
Luv em! Only took about 20 mins to install. Everything you need is in the kit including lock-tite and a polymer drift punch.

I liked the Apex Spring Kit so much that I ordered their SD trigger from Brownell's instead of Apex because they were much closer. That's when I ran into trouble.

My model was made August 2013. After installing the trigger the pistol would not dry fire. I almost couldn't get the slide back off. Somehow I managed it. (I spoke with Scott over at Apex afterwards and he explained if that happens you can remove the end plate, take out the striker and then the slide comes off easy.)
Great customer service from them I might add. Scott even offered to install it for me if I mailed my gun to him. I didn't want to wait and be without.

There is a link on their website to a forum post that explains how to "LIGHTLY" file the back of the trigger to make it work. (http://bit.ly/1a3rKH9) Apparently this is necessary on some models due to some variations in manufacturing.

I also had serious trouble getting my trigger pivot pin in and out. Sometimes it took 30 minutes to get it out. I followed the video from Apex's website but had to push the pivot pin from the opposite direction as outlined in the video to remove it. I also looked at the video at Galloway Precision. They used a brass punch just to knock it out. I tried that and mine wouldn't budge and I was afraid I was going to damage my gun. So I stuck with the Apex method. Scott from Apex said some are easy to remove and some are not. Apparently it varies quite a bit.

I did a partial assembly with a slave pin after filing the trigger. I did not put the slide back on because I was worried it would get stuck again. I incorrectly assumed the sear would drop after pulling the trigger to check for proper operation after sanding the trigger. When it wouldn't, I kept sanding. Come to find out, it won't until re-assembled.

Also the blade safety on the trigger was catching on the frame ever so slightly when pulled. It was then that I made the call to Apex.
They were very helpful but by then I had had enough. I decided to stick with the factory trigger and the Apex Spring kit only. I prefer the way the factory trigger feels over the Apex trigger anyway.

Brownell's has a no questions asked return policy so I'm sending the Apex Trigger back. Apparently most people don't have the kind of problems with the Apex trigger that I did.

All in all, I'm very happy with the way the gun turned out and learned much about it through this process. The only other mod I'm considering is the Galloway Precision 22lb stainless steel recoil spring. Now I need to get to the range this weekend and put some rounds through it. Can't wait.

glad it worked out well! i cant wait to check the mail for my spring kit :)

Thanks for all the info Steve. But now I'm a bit nervous since I have the AET trigger on the way after reading your review. I opted for the trigger instead of the spring kit since I've heard a few people talk about light hammer strikes. So my question to you is do you think with some filing the trigger would be reliable at the range and for self defense? I have 1200 rounds through my Sd9ve with only one FTFeed. I don't want to reduce the reliability of my HD pistol.

To each his own, and no criticism of anyone intended, but this is why I leave my SD9VE alone, except for "cosmetic" changes. Well, I have changed the rear sight with the M&P rear sight which is steel, and I did get the Galloway stainless steel guide rod (17 pounds) but I'm thinking about getting the 20 pound one just to see the difference. (I think the stock recoil assembly is 18 pounds.) I also added a Hogue grip sleeve. If they ever offer a slide cover plate with a design on it, I'll get that...as well as a frame plug.

I'm not planning on messing with the fire control group. The heavy trigger doesn't bother me, and in fact I rather like it on a pistol with no external safety. Mine is smoothing out; sure it's not 1911 smooth, but then it's not a 1911.

BTW - has anyone noticed that Cabela's has the SD on sale? Good grief. I might need to visit them again. (I am on a first name basis at the credit card payment booth.)

I think with careful filing you'll be fine. It seems many don't even need filing. My mistake was filing and not re-assembling after each time for function check. And the reason was I was having a lot of trouble getting the trigger pivot pin in and out.

I've only heard a few comments about light strikes. Most seem to have no trouble. Hopefully I'll find some time to run mine through it's paces this weekend. I'll keep ya posted.

I installed the apex polymer aek trigger in my sd9ve yesterday. I had to do quite a but of filing to get proper operation. With no filing the gun would dry fire 6/10 pulls and they had to fast jerking pulls. A slower clean pull would not rerelease the firing pin. I do like trigger now that it's operating correctly and would recommend it. One piece of advice I would recommend when installing is note how far the stock trigger pushes the trigger bar back in its cavity and mark it. This will let you know how much you have to take off the aek trigger to make sure it will release the pin. This will keep you from having to disassemble multiple times to test proper operation.

Thanks for the info, first timer here and I love my sd40ve, looking forward to installing spring kit in mine!!

I can never understand why people like a gun and buy it then go though so many changes to change it. I like mine they way it is have no ftf or any other problems. So if you want it like a Glock buy a Glock.I would never want to take a chance on a ftf with a gun I carry for sd so I don't mess with a good firing gun.But that is just my opinion.

^^^ I'm glad you like your gun the way it is, but remember that everyone is different and has different needs/likes/wants in a firearm. We don't "mess" with them, we tailor them to our individual preferences. Custom parts can always be removed and original parts replaced if the tailoring doesn't go as planned. BTW, I bought a Glock and had to customize it, too.

I sincerely hope you never suffer an injury, contract an illness, or lose part of your eyesight. But if you do, you might have to tailor your weapons to suit your needs, and I hope you find compassionate people to help you. ;)

New to Forum

So I am new to this site and even to a forum in general so if Im doing something wrong let me know.

As an owner of a SD40 I want to accessorize it! reading posts about grips, springs and triggers are awesome and gonna do it but.... is there a seperate top slide available? would like to switch out to a flat black or black if they manufacture? Heard of such an animal?

The SD40 does have a black slide! If yours is matte stainless, someone either blasted the finish off or switched it with an SD40VE slide. Get a rope! :D

To answer your question, no one sells replacement slides but you can have yours refinished. There are many products on the market (cerakote, aluma-hyde, gun kote, etc.) and they come in a wide range of colors. Take your pick!

BTW, welcome to the board. :)

I have read, youtubed quite a few different scenarios for lightening the pull on the SDseries. I have a 3 1/2 lb striker spring from Wolff. On the packaging there is a caveat advising that the light primer strikes could result in ftfire. Apex seems like the best route to go with the kit, adding the Galloway sear spring along the way to the overhaul. I'll let you know how it all measures up when installed.

I want to install the apex in my so bad I have seen the videos in YouTube look very straight forward but I don't want to ruin my gun.

xs big dot sd40 ve

So I was wondering if the m&p xs big dot sights worked on the 40 sd ve. If they do, do they function okay for shot placement and alignment!

Any M&P sights will work on the SD series. They use the same dovetail mounts.

I installed mine myself. It does seem to be shooting a inch or two low and left but that could just be me. I'm going to have my smith bore sight it just to be sure. I really like these sights. They are designed for defensive use, not target shooting. But at defensive ranges they are excellent.

Also, six o'clock hold is incorrect for these sights. Your suppose to cover the target with your front sight. Dot the "I" sight picture.

So there is no difference in the mp sights when ordering as far as slide lock up and fit? I saw both options for the mp shield and mp core I don't wanna order the wrong one
