It's raining non-stop here in the Sportman's Paradise, and I got to thinking today about how my SD9 and my Glock compare.

First, if you are not familiar with the pre-VE SD's they have the black melanite finish on the slides, M&P 3-dot rear sights, a Trijicon front night sight, and originally came in a hard plastic case (mine came in a cost-saving blue cardboard box).

They were positioned above the much-maligned Sigmas, but below the M&P's. The problem turned out to be that the price was often only a magazine away from the M&P, so the SD's did not sell very well.

The new VE's are priced much lower than the M&P's and seem to be flying off the shelves of gun stores.

The SD9 that I have is very Glock-like in some ways. It takes down just like a Glock, and the insides look just like a Gen 3 Glock. Stripping down the slide is very similar on both guns.

Barrel length is almost identical to G19/23. Length of slide is just a little longer on the SD's and the SD's are a little taller. The grip on the SD is probably one of its best features, and for my hand, at least, it is much nicer than the Glock grip.

The texture of the polymer on the Glock feels like better quality to me, though. The finish on the slides? Apples and oranges, but both are very high quality. The Gen 4 slide still looks a little like teflon. The SD slide has a flatter looking finish. Both look nice and both are durable.

The SD that I have rattles quite a bit if I shake it. The Glock does not. The slide release on my SD is nicer than the one on my Glock (even the new-and-improved Gen4 version). The slide lock on the Glock is smaller, but looks and feels better than the one on the SD.

Lastly, though, and perhaps more important, is the trigger. The Glock trigger just kills the SD trigger. I have dry-fired my SD countless times, fired around 500-700 rounds through it, oiled it, and it still is like snappy a carrot that was sitting in back of the fridge for a month.

Value? I paid $399 on sale for the SD. Came with two mags.

Gen4 Glock was $599 at panic buying prices in December. Came with 3 mags.

Bottom line? If the SD trigger was like a Glock trigger, I don't know if I would ever buy a Glock. I think the SD was a great deal.

You tried the Apex spring kit for the gun yet? $20 will take it a lot closer to the weight of a Glock trigger (though the pull will still be a bit longer).

I've got an SD40VE and a Glock 17. I've also got an M&P 9L. While the SD has a few drawbacks vs the M&P, except for certain specific uses (like competition - I use my M&P for USPSA), I can't say that I really feel that the M&P is worth the price premium over the SD for most people.

Compared to the Glock, honestly with the Apex spring kit installed I consider the SD every bit the gun that the Glock is. After shooting it a bit I kinda like the longer pull and for everything else the SD basically matches it IMHO.

It's definitely on my wish list. From what I have read, it is really good. Saving my nickels and pennies.:)

Yea know the glock does have a nice trigger. While sigmas and SD's have the long pull due to the striker only being at about 5% cocked vs the glock being a little more. The overall feel of the glock is just uncomfortable to me.

I don't buy things just for the name. It has to be for value, comfort, function to me the glock only has one of those. Everybody and their brother has a glock and for their own reasons. Some just don't know any better.

It is my opinion that the SD and Sigma were made for "newer shooters". In that I mean a value gun with a heavy, long trigger. To aid in keeping from accidental discharges, and no need to fumble with a safety.

I do wish that there was a decent drop in trigger set option from S&W for the SD's and Sigmas. To allow for a shorter, lighter trigger.

All in all I will keep my Sigma. I would buy a M&P before a glock. I guess you could call me a "Glock Hater".

Having owned a Glock 19 and 23, and currently owning a SD9, I would take the SD9 over either Glock. The Apex spring kit made the trigger much, much smoother and probably 3 lbs lighter. Well worth the $23.

Have a glock 17 and now have SD9. Prefer the SD9, but keeping Glock since it shares mags w/ the Kel Tec. If SD were I'd sale the Glock. Only complaints about the Smitty, No hi caps. I'll post again after range day on Saturday.
