Nicks

Here is a pic of the nicks.. Any Ideas ?

Did you take the gun down before firing it the first time, and if so, are you sure it didn't come from the factory that way?

Did you take the gun down and find more nicks after firing it again?

If more nicks developed and you are sure, did you notice any foreign pieces when you took it? It's very strange that repeating nicks are not in the same location.

What is the finish inside a nick? Same as the rest of the barrel?

The barrel does move up and down a bit and a foreign object between the barrel and slide could cause nicks on the top side of the barrel.

Nicks in Barrel

Yes.. I did take it apart. I did see just two nicks at that time
He took it to the range and put 50 rnds through it.
He sent me that pic and said now look. Its really nicked up .
Did'nt see anything in there out of place or that didn't belong in there. But since the issue was getting worse I suggested that it was time to call the service dept.

Not that it would help you or him but follow-up pictures would surely be of great interest to everyone following this post - pictures from several angles to see the additional nicks.

Include a shot of the slide with barrel and recoil spring and then just the inside of the slide with the barrel removed.

This problem must be caused by something very obvious.

It's hard to conceive of how nicks can appear in several places but the gun continued to function!

New Gun

My Son got his gun back " Actually a new one" And Smith sent along 3 new mags. They said it was a Defect in the slide causing the nicks. Kudos to Smith & Wesson. I call that outstanding customer service.

Trying hard to visualize how there could be a defect in the slide that made dents but still allowed the gun to function. Wish S&W had been more specific.

Agreed....

It seems the bushing is the only component that SHOULD contact the barrel at that location unless maybe the spring. Glad the OP got a new gun out of it.
