first time hand gun owner here! have a couple of questions...

1st - I've put rough 350-400 rounds through my sd9ve and every now and again my thumb, when in firing position, will bump the magazine release, Ejecting it. Any tips on avoiding that? I mean if it's just a simple, "grip it differently", then I understand. My concern is while I'm at the range, it's no biggie but in a self defense situation it could be problematic

2nd - I've cleaned the gun twice now, and the 2nd time I
Admit I may have used too much oil on the trigger mechanism, and the guide rod. That spring and rod looked "wet" the trigger at times would have leaked oil. My concern was if I didn't load a clip fully, on the last shot, the shell would eject but the slide wouldn't stay locked.

Thoughts?

On the 1st you either have massive man hands or or you have poor grip. There are a few vids on you tube that may help teach proper grip.

On the 2nd don't over lube the gun. Apex has a install video of the sd spring kit at the end of the video they show the proper lube points of the sd. The slide should always lock back on last round. If it doesn't you either have a massive amount of lube or you have another problem and the gun needs to be sent back to S&W.

"1st - I've put rough 350-400 rounds through my sd9ve and every now and again my thumb" First time I read that I thought you really had a problem!!!! Maybe if you posted a photo of your grip it might help, but guessing you are either your hand is too low on the grip, it should be a high as you cn get it, or you have over-rotated the gun so the the slie is not aligned with the bones in your forearm. Another thing you might try is extending you thumbs pointing forward alongside the frame (not the slide).

Regarding the over-oiling: You didn't see anything in the owners manual about oiling the trigger mechanism or the guide rod--did you? 1 drop on each of the frame rails, 1 drop on the barrel (smear it around) and one drop on top the barrel where it locks into the slide, and a tiny bit where the barrel engages the front of the trigger block. I like a dab of grease on the sear, and whre the trigger bar engages the sear. That's it. Check the manual for locations if not clear.

Hahaha. I keep shooting my self in the thumb! That must be an issue with my hands being too big...

Thank for tips on the vids I'll check them out... Here are a few quick photos of the grip. It's what cam standard on the SD9VE when I bought it, brand new. I've not modified it in any way. Also I attached a photo that shows you how I grip the pistol with my right hand.

Yep your thumb is to low. It should be right under the slide catch and some what parallel with the slide.

Alright! Thank you. Will try again. Loving shooting this pistol. Also already watched those vids. Thanks for the references

I think I see the problem, you shrunk your SD! My thumb willl barely reach the mag relase and yours can reach the trigger!

Move that thumb up!

Hahaha. One of the many setbacks to being taller. It helped me in college athletics though.

Am headed to the range again this afternoon. Will report back!

Switched it up today. I wasn't as accurate but no bumping the magazine release. I used the "two thumbs forward" approach. Was comfortable, but will take some getting used to I think. Which is fine, I enjoy going to the range!
