Hey Guys, My Bro in law has a shield that is giving us trouble. I took the sear block out and found that the sear plunger is stuck. Any ides on how to get it free so i can clean out any gunk.

Thanks

Go to the Apex website and watch the video for the shield kit. They have one that shows stripping just about every part out of the lower.

How many rounds do you have through the gun? Is it a 9 or a 40?

It's not budging, he's gonna call S&W tomorrow. He only has about 150 rounds through this 9mm Shield.

Wait you have 150 rounds through it and we're detail stripping it to clean the gunk around the sear?

Detail stripping the frame for routine cleaning is completely unessesary. All that is needed is some alcohol on some q-tips after every range trip.

Kodiak, This pistol is my brother in laws. He was at the range with some friends and around the end the trigger went dead. He said it felt like there was no reset. I had him bring it over to look at it. When I took it apart I noticed the sear had no spring pressure on it. I took out the sear block to see if I could get the plunger moving, but it is really stuck. Sucks for him because he had just got it and this was only the second trip to the range.

That's really weird...I take it that pushing on it didn't free it up?

Some of the earlier M&Ps had an issue like this. You can do a search on this forum for M&P Dead Trigger and get some info.

The issue was solved by S&W by going to a bigger sear plunger and spring. The trigger mechanism housing has a larger hole on the newer models to accommodate that.

On the older ones the problem was often a dirty plunger and spring but sometimes the plunger slipped and didn't engage the sear. I'd be interested to see a pic of the Shield plunger compared to an older M&P sear plunger.

Sear Plunger is stuck too after a 73 Rnds

I have a 9mm Shield that I bought last year.
I shot it at my local indoor gun range recently and after 73 Rnds I got a dead trigger.
The total number of Rounds I shot through this gun is 943 Rnds.

I removed the sear housing block assembly from the frame of the gun and inspected it and saw that the sear plunger got stuck too. After trying to desperately remove it, I tried immersing the housing block in a small container filled with Hoppe's No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner to see if I can loosen up the sear plunger and spring.
Then I tried pushing the stuck plunger with a Q-tip several times but it still doesn't budge.

I need help.

Two weeks seems like forever.
When S&W does the repair do they change out the locking or trigger block too so that the wear on the gun will be equal?

Also do they test fire the gun after the repair?

Two weeks seems like forever.
If two weeks seems long, try one of the other manufacturers. Some take a month or more and that's normal. And they make you pay for shipping both ways where S&W covers the cost of shipping. I feel your pain, but it's a good process and the only way your gun will get fixed properly.

There is no fixed formula to what they will do. They will analyze the problem and fix or replace what they deem necessary. If they think firing is necessary, they'll do that.

Thanks I'll keep you guys posted as I sent it out to S&W, but took pictures of it before hand to compare later what changes (if any) were made other than the sear block issue.

After a total of 21 days (from shipping to repair) I finally got my Shield back today from S&W.
Recall previously, 73 Rnds at the range one day and I got a dead trigger. 943 Rnds Total in about a year of shooting.

I compared pictures prior to repair and compared them to now. They only changed out the sear assembly.
I took out the sear block just to see how the new plunger and spring looked if it was larger but it looks about the same as the one that was stuck.
I wonder would it be wise to grease the sears plunger and spring before I put it all back together?

I will test fire it pretty soon.

21 days is good turnaround.

I would not put grease on the internals, just the rails. A good gun oil is sufficient for the rest, if actually needed.

And no, they do not change things that do not directly contribute to the problem, so no "wear balance". That would seem to me to be excessive at less than 1k rounds.

They do test fire where appropriate, and do not clean afterwards. I always clean anything I send in first, that way I can tell if they test-fired it.

Also they put a sear deactivation lever, pin, and spring to hold it in place, but not the magazine disconnect lever.
Originally my sear deactivation lever and spring just fell off (I didn't have a pin to hold it nor a magazine disconnect).
I cleaned mine a bit before I sent it out and took pictures too. I can't wait to shoot my gun again.
