Wife and I decided that instead of caring the kids to Florida this year for vacation we would do something different . We would take 2 vacations this year one now and one in the fall and stay a little closer to home. We just got back from Chattanooga TN after staying there for a week and seeing all the sites and doing pretty much everything the area had to offer and let me tell you WOW . IT WAS GREAT. I have not been the re in 15 years and the area has changed so much compared to my last visits, very very clean, and very nice people. It was great. The kids our 10 year old daughter and her friend that went too and our 3 year-old boy had the greatest time, she even said she liked it better than Florida and the beach. We went to Rock City,Ruby Falls,The Incline Railway,The Tennessee Aquarium,Lake Winnie amusement park, rode a couple of the local trains and steam paddle boats. Makes me proud of my home state and our neighbor Georgia. The second vacation were gonna head up to gatlinburg this fall. Now if we could just turn Memphis around like Chattanooga has that would be great or we could always just give Memphis to Mississippi.

Glad you enjoyed visiting Chattanooga. It is a great place to visit and wonderful to call home. Great shooting ranges too. :)

We did the same thing, past on Florida and went to Chattanooga...had a ball,Rock City and Ruby Falls did the aquarium as well...stayed in some very nice rooms...Then off to Gatlinburg for the outlets(wifes thing). The 3 year old boy and I went with the gocarts and the Knife Store on the way back home to spend absolutely every dime.

Chattanooga is a great family destination. It looks to me like you missed the Holmes wrecker museum, and the Chattanooga Lookout's baseball game. We like to go there frequently. Lake Winnie is great. It's like you stepped back in time.

I haven't been to 'nooga in probably 45 years. But I remember Rock City and Ruby Falls! And Gatlinburg is one of my favorite places! I always love the drive over the mountains to Cherokee NC. Beautiful scenery!

I always wanted to go to Rock City. When I was a kid in southwestern Kentucky, every other barn in sight of the paved road had "See Rock City" painted on the side.

I finally got to See Rock City after seeing the barns for 60 years. It was worth the trip and we'll be back. I even climbed the rock wall :)

The Smoky Mountain NP is just wonderful too!

Memphis

I think TN should give Memphis to Detroit. It would fit right in up there.

Oh yeah we did get to go through the holmes towing and recovery museum and thought it was great, those old trucks were very interesting, and lake winnie was awesome for the kids and us too,for $20 we rode the rides as much as we wanted, clean and laid back too.Good and reasonable priced concessions also.Great time .

Chattanooga was just a place on the map I passed through going back and forth to Florida. Then in the early 90s in early March I got caught in a freak snowstorm. About 24" of snow and the interstate was closed at Monteagle. I was driving a 4wd Suburban and I was scared. Finally found a room on the s side of Chat. and was snowbound for 3 days. Bored, I read everything I could pick up, all the free real estate and sale papers etc. I realized how much the area had to offer then and that it was much more than a big pancake sign on the side of a southbound hill.

It wouldn't take too much excavating to reroute the Mississippi River and give Memphis to Arkansas where it belongs.:DI think the electorate in Tennessee would go for it. It could be our own little stimulus package.

What horrible thing did Arkansas ever do to you?

I hate to be the devil's advocate, but I really have enjoyed myself in Memphis on a lot of occasions. Tough town, I know, but all big cities are. Just a matter of staying out of the bad places.

When I hear "Rock City" I think of the one in Western NY State.
Rock City Park - Olean, NY
Spent a lot of time there as a kid, it was owned (still may be) by one of my cousins, my great uncle ran oil leases there and in the surrounding area.
