You start out with "maybe a .357 mag 'Smith revolver would be cool" , or "maybe a .44 Desert Eagle" ? But then when you come to your midlife senses and you drop $1630 at the evil LGS and bring home a not really practical 12" bbl .460 XVR ! So I'm officially a .460 mag owner. Just picked it up today. A BIG thank you plug goes out to member ruggyh for lending his deep .460 XVR knowledge via multiple PM's to aid me in the best choice for my specific intent. Without his input I would have unknowingly purchased the less than ideal 10.5" model. After giving my .460 some fondling and hug time , I must say what a really nicely handcrafted firearm ! Fit, finish and function seem to be of excellent quality (and myself being a CNC machinist , recognize top quality work). I also dove right into reloading components as it was stupid of me to drop $50-70 for a box of ammo. I plan on loading up some conservative loads and try her out this weekend !

Congrats RC. That’s one far out midlife buster. Totally agree on the hand loading. +1 on the XTP's, I've sent a lot of them down range with great results.

Enjoy and hope to see a range report soon!
 
Thanks guys, this midlife gift only happened as a result of a "more than expected " annuall company bonus ;) Generally speaking I am simply an amatuer precision shooter and handloader, and not worthy of these high end firearms. Even my long guns are mostly just box stock shooters with some ergonomic bolt ons and good mid level optics. My only other handun is a Glock G35 and G22 which I do some recreational tatical training with. I belong to a club and a good shooting buddy has a 5" bbl .500 S&W mag and I shot that pretty decent, so my 12" .460 should sharpen up my handgun skills, specifically my "work in progress" trigger squeeze. Shooting my .300WM "punisher" has definately trained me to loose the "flinch" . I now find myself shooting my .223 and my .308 much more steady from training with the .300WM

Could you clarify your intended uses and why the 12 inch is perfect and the 10.5 inch would have been less than ideal? Just curious.

My sole intent is 100yd and 200 meter benchrest and prone target. While initially I thought the 10.5 would have been ideal, another member who has both suggested the 12" would be a slightly better fit. The 12" has a heavier fluted barrel (better heat dissapation) , the 12" also has a bottom bipod rail , which I already have a high end Atlas QD bipod for my long guns , and the 12" has no comp so the muzzle blast over the course of say 40 rounds fired will be less irritating. Don't take my previous post as negitively bashing the 10.5, I simply am thinking the 12 is a bit better suited for my situation.
 
Well, I was 35 when I bought my 460v.... Does that qualify as my mid-life thing?? If not, hate to see what it will be!

Enjoy that big hammer! There is something fun about dropping 48 grains of powder.....into a case that will be fired from a handgun! :D
 
Great looking pistol, but 35 being midlife. That age you are just a kid. You need to know to enjoy that age in every thing in life. Your guns, and especially those things you do with your body. That body doesn't last long with what it is capable of at 35. Sorry, just thinking back to when I was 35 and it seems like yesterday. Now I am 61 and things are surely not the same. I still shoot, but not nearly as much (with guns or with my body) enjoy your youth to the fullest.
 
I currently consider 59 be 'mid-life', and I figure I'm entitled to at least one crisis per year; more if I can get away with it.

You need to SBR that thing ... *grin*

I think the 12" barrel is more suited to the full potential of the 460 than a 10.5" and especially as to its advantages over the shorter length barrels they offer. That huge muzzle flash some find 'so cool' from the 3.5" version is just wasted powder when there is simply no way any 460 load will develop any real oomph out of that short tube. Kinda why I have had good results from a 22" MGM custom Encore bbl with integral brake for reaching out there and doing so in comfort and all the accuracy a 460 can show with the right set up. l don't know how much difference an extra inch and a half makes in a 460. But l can say my 10 1/2'' PC is a real fire breather. The 2 times l have fired it in public got everybody's attention very quickly. The first such incident came at an indoor range. Firing the first couple rds of Hornady 200gr factory load caused the whole line to go silent. The next time was outdoors at a monthly IHMSA silh match. l got a similar response as the indoor range. The most amazing aspect of this big revolver was the way it made those 55 pound steel rams jump off the rail at 200 Meters. Never have l seen them actually LEAP in the air before.
l have since learned to enjoy less than MAX loads in this gun..My Speer manual has some quite adequate reduced loads in the 1500-1600fps range. l see the SW460 like the new 700HP Charger HellCat..l don't need all that horsepower to have fun...But lt is nice to know its there
