I dunno...
We do NOT need ANY additional gun control. No new anti-gun laws. Some sates and localities absolutely need to move to lessen the restrictions (DC, NJ, NY, MD, IL, CA). The "assult weapons" ban was a bunch of bull and should NOT be reinstated. But I am with the NRA that some of the common sense regs already on the books are appropriate and need to be enforced.
I don't think a gang-banger addicted to crack-n-smack and a known history of mental illness should be able to purchase a shoulder-fired anti-tank missle at Wal-mart. If there were absolutely zero limitation, anyone could purchase any weapon or weapon system with no questions asked. I don't think the terrorist with no ID who snuck down from Canada should be able to walk into Cabela's and buy 12 full-auto AK's, 100 hand grenades, and 5,000 rounds of ammo. With absolutely no restrictions, the 9-11 hijackers coulda just used Bin-Laden oil money to buy an Appache rather than taking over a domestic flight...
Current restrictions prohibit the extreme example above. Do I like being subjected to background checks each time I make a retail purchase of a firearm? Not really. But I can live with that so long as it is "instant." I would have a HUGE problem with a misguided "waiting period."
Do I like needing a license to carry concealed? Not really. But I can live with it if it allows the police to lock up the non-permit-holding gang-banger with a criminal record and a Hi-Point hidden in his wasteband.
I don't have much of a problem with the NFA of 37. I don't have a problem with resonable and speedy CC permit requirements - although I DO have a HUGE problem with burdensome or non-issuance of CC in some states and I DO have a HUGE problem with certain other States not honoring my CC permit.
I'll toe the NRA line. Reasonable laws already on the book are acceptable. Unreasonable laws on the books in some States need to go away. No new unreasonable, unwarranted, misguided, unfounded restrictions are needed at either State or Federal levels....
