Greetings. I'm brand new to this forum and have just purchased a Model 29-3 and have looked over all the info here and could not find what I am looking for.

Can anyone please help provide any info you can find on serial #AJF9160? Just would like to know the history of this firearm. Many thanks in advance.

Clint Eastwood made it verry popular.

Large "N" frame 44 mag.

Beaters can be had for $600, shooters start at about $900, high condition start around $1200.

Loud with a strong recoil.

Beautiful and desirable guns.

Thanks for the help so far. Should I call S&W for details like dates, manufactured, etc. more specifically? I tried using the online resource and couldn't put my finger on where this serial number falls in the sequences. Thanks everyone!

More detailed history from S&W will cost you $50 and will take a while for the Company historian to get a letter back to you. I have never been that curious about any of my guns.

Welcome

Welcome aboard Masterdale! I'm confused as to what exact information you desire about your gun. I will give you some information about the 29-3 guns in general. The -3 of the model is the engineering change of that gun(eliminating the cylinder counterbore & pinned barrel). This change occurred in 1982. This model was catalogued with a 4", 6", 8 3/8" barrel length. In 1983 the serial numbering system changed from an "Nxxxxxx" to three letters and four numbers. S&W NEVER manufactured and/or shipped guns in numerical order of the serial number! We collectors regard the BOD as the date the gun was shipped from the factory. The serial number of your gun provides only an approx. time frame when the gun could have been shipped!

Thank you all for the help. In summary, it looks like I have a circa 1985 Model 29 if I follow this correctly. That's as specific as we can get. Correct? Thanks again.

Hi everyone,
Can somebody please give me the date of manufacture of:
Mod. 17-4, 4"bbl with Ser. No. 99K2729
Mod. 36 with Ser. No. X1544
Thanks.

To fine tune it some..... I saw Smith with a AJF5xxx s/n, and it shipped of October 23, 1985. I'd put your M29 near that, give or take a month.
